David Toms Ken Duke share lead after opening round on Champions Tour
DULUTH, Ga. (AP) — David Toms ran off three straight birdies after a rain delay and closed with a short birdie when he judged the wind right, giving him a 7-under 65 and a share of the lead with Ken Duke after one round of the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. Duke was first off at No. 1 on the TPC Sugarloaf and dropped only one shot. Equally important was finishing with pars in a strong wind after the rain stoppage. Steve Flesch had a 67.
2021 Will Be A Make-Or-Break Year For Norway’s Left
Review of Martin Tranmæls Metode, by Mímir Kristjánsson (Forlaget Manifest, 2020). Norwegians will go to the polls in autumn 2021 to elect a government for another four-year term. Since 2013, Erna Solberg and her Conservative Party (Høyre) have led the country with support from a medley of coalition partners: first, the hard-right Progress Party from 2013 onward, with the Christian Democrats and the Liberal Party (Venstre) also joining since 2018.

The Serendipity of Reading
Reading can often have a serendipitous, almost conspiratorial feel to it. Just as you begin reading about a topic, suddenly you notice it everywhere. It was there all along, of course, but you hadn’t yet thought to look for it – nor for the threads linking one piece of reading to another. Just occasionally, it hits you all at once. Not so much the slow reveal as the cascade.

Poetry Review | Tertiary Colours: A Post-Traumatic Verse By Aaron Kent
Poetry as therapy usually produces dull work. It’s function is to aid a person in their recovery or to help them through a difficulty. Insofar as it helps the person writing it, it has value. For the reader though, it can be turgid. Aaron Kent’s Tertiary Colours is anything but. Subtitled A Post-Traumatic Verse, Kent’s pamphlet from independent UK publisher Knives, Forks and Spoons manages to avoid the worst aspects of poetry-as-therapy.

Essay | New Report Highlights, Stark Gender Inequality In Irish Poetry Presses
When the Gerald Dawe-edited Cambridge Companion to Irish Poets was published earlier this year, it drew a strong reaction from many who pointed out the collection of essays failed to properly take account of women’s contribution to the Irish poetic canon.
I’m More Interested In The ‘Ish’ Bit Of True-Ish | Interview With Doireann Ní Ghríofa
Doireann Ní Ghríofa is a bilingual Irish writer, born in Galway in 1981. She writes both prose and poetry, in both Irish and English. Her books explore birth, death, desire, and domesticity. Her awards include the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, a Seamus Heaney Centre Fellowship, the Ireland Chair of Poetry bursary, the Michael Hartnett Award, and the Ostana Prize (Italy).
Poetry Review | So Long, Calypso By Liz McSkeane’s
There is a diffidence in the breezy dismissal of this collection’s title So Long, Calypso, that is at odds with the poems within, which are anything but diffident or dismissive. In this collection, Liz McSkeane treats us to poems that reveal themselves slowly. They are concerned with issues of life and death, memory, returning and moving forward. There is something uncanny happening in these pages—a universality combined with a definite and real sense of the specific and peculiar.
Bookless In Seattle? Independent Bookshops in the Home of Amazon
Driving through the 99 tunnel, a road that stretches through Seattle, if you pay attention you will notice on your left-hand side of the tunnel’s concrete walls graffiti which reads “Fuck Bezos”. This graffiti refers to multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. Amazon completely reshaped the way we shopped online and more to the point how people bought books.
Culture Archives - HeadStuff
It is a sign of the health and determination of the Irish poetry scene that a long-time stalwart like Southword magazine is making a return to the world of print, while new magazines like Gorse, Banshee, The Penny Dreadful, The Well Review… It speaks a lot to the integrity of a justice system when it finds somebody innocent based on the evidence, even when all involved are convinced of his guilt.
Poetry Review | When I Closed My Eyes I Was Elsewhere
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to be in Dublin at the same time that Poetry Ireland held an event at their building off Parnell Square on the place of Edmund Spenser in Irish poetry. The discussion involved Trevor Joyce, Leanne O’Sullivan, John McAuliffe, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, and Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin. Each of these poets has in their own way engaged with Spenser, his work and his awkward place in the Irish literary canon.
Toms comes to Senior Players looking to build on Open win
Nothing like winning a major to toss a big weight off a golfer's shoulders, particularly when he had gone more than seven years without a victory on either the senior or regular tours. Now, Toms has a shot at another one. He comes into the Constellation Senior Players Championship looking to build on his win at the U.S. Senior Open at the Broadmoor two weeks ago. "I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to try to win a tournament," Toms said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sooner or later, somebody was bound to make a long putt at the Broadmoor. David Toms made not just one, but two, on Sunday — first to take the lead on the 16th hole, then to protect it on No. 17 and set himself for the win at the U.S. Senior Open.

The Song Under The Song | Poetry Review: Orpheus by Theo Dorgan
In the Winter 2015 issue of the The Stinging Fly Billy Ramsell invited poets to write what Ramsell called souterrains- a kind of layer below, an archaeology of the poems that would feature in the issue. These souterrains were poems in their own right, and had some relationship with the completed poems of which they were the bedrock.
Feature | The Self-Conscious Reader
Whenever you read anything, you are made conscious of your class. This is especially true if you have a working-class background. I was struck by this recently while reading Alberto Manguel’s essay collection Into the Looking Glass Wood in which he discusses the Argentina of his adolescence. In particular, I was struck by Manguel’s crisis that arose when he discovered that a former teacher of his, the man who made him a reader, turned out to have been an informant for the country’s military junta.

The River Unreeling Warbler Song | Poetry Review: Paul Chambers Latitudes
So much of Welsh literary culture seems to revolve around the continued revival of the Welsh language and it’s increasing primacy in official circles. It makes reading this collection of haiku from Paul Chambers refreshing. Chambers, in addition to his work as a poet, is involved in the establishment of a Welsh haiku journal, supported by the Wales Arts Review.

Fantasy columnist Billy Andrade Colin Montgomerie After connecting with Jerry Kelly at Hualalai, it's tempting to keep it floored with a notable. However, with one of the smallest purses on the schedule and it being so early, patience is key. Garwood's record is strong here and I'm not going to miss him. Take Down The Hard Par 4s
Close your eyes and picture the longest, hardest par 4 at your home course. If you're a player who can't physically overpower it (and hey, that's most of us), a hole like that can mess with your entire process. It starts by over-swinging off the tee. Then, even if you hit a good drive, you're still left with a long—sometimes very long—shot into the green. If you don't get there, which you probably won't, you're looking at a less-than-full wedge shot, and those require touch and precision.
Why Edmund Spenser Matters in the 21st Century? - Headstuff
‘Poetry is a complex instrument, and a poet like Spenser knows how to play it to the full, and any response needs to take account of all that. The most adequate, fully engaged response, I would argue, is another poem that picks up all the carefully distributed threads of Spenser’s utterance and gives them radically altered in many ways, but recognizably chiming with the original, and adding new meaning.
The First Modern Ref
In the week before the 1936 FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Sheffield United, the appointed referee was sacked from his job for spending too little time at work. Unlike many top-flight referees, Henderson (commonly known as Harry) Nattrass didn’t work in an office, school or other middle-class profession, he worked down the pit. A coal miner since the age of 14, he worked at Seaham Colliery, near Sunderland. It was owned by Lord Londonderry, one of most aristocratic coal owners in the country.
Toms puts FedExCup hopes on hold
“We’re waiting the health department to inspect it now,” Toms said, adding that classes start on Monday. Toms’ father’s employees in Baton Rouge can’t get in to work, and the title company where his sister works has 6 feet of water in the office. Not to mention, Carter Plantation, Toms’ first golf course design in Springfield, La., is closed due to the flooding. He knows of several other courses that have been completely destroyed.
Irish reactions to the Velvet Revolution in 1989
Here in the Czech Republic, it is no ordinary Tuesday. Today in the Czech calendar is Freedom and Democracy Day. November 17th 1989 marks a significant day in the modern history of the Czech Republic. November 17th 1989 occupies a position in the narrative of Czech history, like October 28th 1918, of the beginning of a hopeful new era. It marks the emergence from the oppression of regime foisted on Czechs from outside.
“No hearts in Europe more rejoiced than Irish hearts that Bohemia was a republic”: Irish reactions to Czech Independence
Today marks the 97th anniversary of the declaration of independence and the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic. This declaration, and the formation of this new state took place just weeks before the general election in Britain and Ireland that saw the Irish Parliamentary Party become a spent force, and Sinn Féin securing a mandate winning almost all seats.

Book Launch alert: Soccer in Munster, 1877-1937
I know I’ve been quiet on this blog for some time, but that’s due to the imminent release of my first monograph, and a move of country. Next month, I’ll be celebrating the publication and launch of my monograph, Soccer in Munster: A Social History, 1877-1937, published by Cork University Press.

Reading History: Tom Hunt’s Sport and Society in Victorian Ireland
Moving on from my last ‘reading history’ post, I’ve decided to speed forward a little in time to a book I read in my first year as an undergraduate in University College, Cork. This book has had a profound influence not alone on me, but on my field of specialist research since it was first published in 2007. The book, Tom Hunt’s Sport and Society in Victorian Ireland: The Case of Westmeath, first came to my attention when I was in secondary school and several months before it was ever published.
Reading History: The Young Oxford History of Britain and Ireland
In a now famous injunction, E.H. Carr in his classic text What Is History? suggests that if you want to know the historian, then you should know their history. While Carr meant this in terms of the politics that will have informed the historian, I’m using it in this post, as a jumping off point for an extension of Carr’s injunction. More than just knowing the historian’s history, it might be worth knowing their reading history.
