A court will decide the future of Yuraygir’s feral horses. That matters for native plants and animals
From poems to films and books of history, horses feature widely in Australian popular culture. Feral horses, also known as brumbies, are descendants of domesticated horses that now live and breed independently in the wild. For some people, these horses are a cherished part of Australia's cultural heritage. For others, they represent a major threat to the environments they inhabit.
The joy of overcoming self-righteousness
In my final year of university, outwardly, everything seemed to be going well for me. I was attending my chosen university, specializing in the subject I loved best. I had no money worries. I was dating the girl I wanted to marry and would marry. But I was unhappy. It seemed that nothing was quite good enough for me. The lectures seemed dull, the lecturers tedious and old. My academic work seemed to be a grind.
ORP: A Reading in Search of Meaning
Early in my career, I observed a new ORP controller take a school pool to 18 mg/L in front of me. The sensor was clean. The controller was calibrated. The installation was textbook. By every measure, the system was working correctly. The pool, however, disagreed. Chlorine was spiking past 30 mg/L before I switched it off. The pH was swinging. The controller was hunting, dosing, overcorrecting, dosing again. The inevitable conclusion from everyone on site was the same: ORP control doesn't work.
TDS: A Number in Search of a Meaning
When I first started studying pools — back when enthusiasm was strong and experience was thin — one of the "facts" I picked up was international TDS limit. Something around 1,100 or 1,500 mg/L, depending on who you read. This seemed verified on the ground locally where I was at the time. In that environment, pools above the ‘limit’ were often green and unresponsive to treatment with chlorine, filtration, nothing seemed to recover them.

Feral horse numbers in Australia's Alps are on the rise again: It's time to act
Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain Last year, we noted early signs of recovery in Australia's high country, following the reduction of feral horse numbers. These had dropped from 17,000 in 2023 to around 3,000 in 2024 across Kosciuszko National Park, thanks to the management efforts of NSW National Parks staff and contractors. But horse numbers are already bouncing back. The latest survey data estimate between 6,476 and 16,411 horses now roam the national park. So what happened?
Feral horse numbers in Australia’s alps are on the rise again. It’s time to act

I love my horse like family. But this species has no business in a precious national park
My family has a small property near Albury. It's our pride and joy. Twelve acres of recovering sheep country, half of it set aside for bush. Since we've been here, I've spotted 195 bird species plus the occasional echidna and wallaby. Subscribe now for unlimited access.

Editor’s Note – This essay is part of a series on Ministry, Disabilities, and Inclusion running April 20-25. A Round Up with links will be available later this spring. My wife and I are the parents of a funny, creative, loving 19-year-old son named Sean. He is one of the great joys of our life. On Sundays I sit with my arm around him in church. Sometimes I will just sit beside him while he plays video games at home.
Season of growth for Wildcats: Led by Kwiatkowski, Wilmington High wrestling looks to the future
The final scorebooks from the 2025–2026 wrestling season tell only a small part of the story for Wilmington High School. What they do not show is the development of one of the youngest teams in recent memory, the emergence of new leaders, and a foundation that positions the Wildcats for significant growth in the years ahead. Wilmington competed this winter with an 18-person roster made up of just two seniors, two juniors sidelined by injury, and a large core of 14 freshmen and sophomores.

With thousands of feral horses gone, Kosciuszko's fragile ecosystems are slowly recovering
Credit: David M Watson, Patrick Finnerty, CC BY-ND. In Kosciuszko National Park in Australia's alpine region, the landscape is slowly changing. Patches of native vegetation cropped bald by horses are regrowing. Some long-eroded creek banks look less compacted along the edges. Visitors come across fewer horses standing on the roads, a real traffic hazard. In 2023, New South Wales authorized the aerial shooting of feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park.

Challenges of a prehabilitation program for oesophageal cancer patients in the Australian setting
Introduction Patients with oesophageal cancer (OC) considered for surgery typically undergo neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) before oesophagectomy.1 While NAT improves cancer survival compared to surgery alone, these regimens can negatively impact patient fitness and subsequent surgical outcomes.2, 3 Prehabilitation is a preoperative process that aims to improve the functional capacity of patients with exercise, nutrition and psychological interventions, helping patients endure surgical stress and...
Pumpers retire or write down diesel fleets amid e-frac demand
ProFrac Holding announced it will retire roughly 400,000 hp while ProPetro took a $189 million impairment in Q3 as pressure pumpers grappled with managing their legacy frac fleets. In a market with tight demand, frackers are deciding the diminished returns they can command for Tier II diesel-only equipment are not worth the maintenance. Planting Seeds for Success
Japan aims to integrate low-carbon hydrogen into its energy mix, driven by decarbonization goals, energy security and industrial competitiveness. However, high costs and limited access to resources needed for blue and green hydrogen challenge domestic production.
What Energy Needs to Know About a Second Trump Presidency
The U.S. electoral college and popular votes have been decisively won and the stock market reflected approval by rallying to new highs. “Drill, baby, drill” is just one of the promises President-Elect Donald Trump has vowed to keep after taking office again in 2025. With the new president elected, we can now explore other areas where keeping promises is likely to shape the industry and price of oil for years to come.
Overcome Renewable Energy Challenges with Accurate, Real-Time Data
As the process to successfully build profitable renewable assets becomes more challenging, the need for accurate and up-to-date data on the power grid is needed more than ever. Asset owners, developers, engineers and suppliers need to comprehend the power market at scale to be able to make well-informed decisions in a time where the smallest misunderstanding in data can lead to project failure. Project data is published across many different websites and in a variety of formats.

Rodgers urges Celtic to improve their mentality after Killie blow
Japan star Kyogo Furuhashi's 33rd-minute header looked as if it might give Celtic all three points in front of their Parkhead faithful. But David Watson's header from a corner secured a share of the spoils for Kilmarnock. The draw took Celtic a point clear of Glasgow arch-rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table. Rangers can regain first place when they go in search of a sixth successive league win away to St Johnstone on Sunday.
