As a transportation and ag journalist, I "cover the waterfront"--that is, the inland barge and towing sector--for The Waterways Journal, a trade weekly that has published continuously since 1887. Time spent as a merchant seaman on both "blue water" and "brown water" vessels gave me a familiarity with the industry.

I had written and published freelance, but my first full-time job was as managing editor of a monthly liturgical publication.

Mostly for the worse: shortening attention spans and activating the amygdala rather than the cerebral cortex.
