What was your first job as a journalist?
If my high school newspaper doesn't count, then I'd say the nightclub and art articles I wrote for Scrawling Wall, an indie newspaper in HNL.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yep! I'm that old.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer emails since I generally ignore phone calls from numbers I don't recognize. Pls. include photos, artwork or a PDF of the comics.
What's your favorite social network?
As f**ked up as it is, I still get a lot of value and make interesting connections via Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
I love hearing from manga/comics journalists from other countries. I'd love to connect with more writers who cover the scene in Korea.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Follow your curiosity and see where it takes you. Focus on a 'beat' and become the expert / go-to person rather than a general news reporter
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I don't think any pitch is inherently bad -- It just might not be something that I cover.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That anime and manga are the same thing.
