Low-frequency fluctuations in semiconductor lasers with delayed optical feedback
Low-frequency fluctuations in a semiconductor laser with optical feedback are analyzed with a traveling wave model and its instantaneous and compound-cavity modes. Compound-cavity mode curves, their height and width in the frequency/carrier-density plane, enable fast estimates of parameter ranges where low-frequency fluctuations occur. These ranges cover a larger part of the parameter space than is commonly realized. © 2026 Optica Publishing Group.

Taste "Tests" at School Introduce Kids to Healthy Choices
Posted by Deborah Kane, National Director, USDA Farm to School Program in Food and Nutrition Farming Feb 21, 2017 Dime Rosser, 7, a student at Clinton Elementary School, takes a look at kale. Photo courtesy of Spencer Ainsley, Poughkeepsie Journal. I don’t know how many times I’ve told my children, “Go on, give it a try,” or, “Try it, you might like it.” Tired as those two phrases might be, they’re true. How do you know if you like something if you’ve never tried it?
Supporting Regionally Grown Food
Ed. Note: Champions of Change is a weekly initiative to highlight Americans who are making an impact in their communities and helping our country rise to meet the many challenges of the 21st century. At the Rural Champions of Change roundtable, I had a chance to tell President Obama about FoodHub – a dynamic online marketplace that helps regional food buyers and sellers find each other, connect and conduct business.
Numerical study of optical feedback coherence in semiconductor laser dynamics
Abstract The nonlinear dynamics of a semiconductor laser with coherent, as compared to incoherent, delayed optical feedback systems have been discussed and contrasted in prior research literature. Here, we report simulations of how the dynamics change as the coherence of the optical feedback is systematically varied from being coherent, through several levels of partial coherence, to incoherent. An increasing rate of phase disturbance is used to vary the coherence.
National Farm to School Month Highlights Benefits to America’s Students and Communities
It’s National Farm to School Month and USDA’s Office of Community Food Systems is here to help…and not just in October! All year long, we offer research, grants, training and technical assistance to help connect child nutrition programs with local foods. Here’s why. Farm to school helps form healthy habits. By incorporating local foods, farm to school programs help school meal programs fulfill the updated nutrition standards with appealing and diverse offerings. And the results are impressive.
Nationwide Census on Farm to School Activities Shows Increased Use of Local Foods in Schools
What can $598 million buy you these days? A lot of local food! This week, USDA announced early results from USDA’s second Farm to School Census indicating that school districts across the country invested more than half a billion dollars in local foods in the 2013-2014 school year. That represents an increase of $212 million (or 55 percent) over final results from the last census, conducted two years ago.

During National Farm to School Month, USDA Celebrates Grantees’ Accomplishments and a New Office
Along with brilliantly colored hard squash, crisp apples, and hearty greens, October ushers in National Farm to School Month, a time to raise awareness about and celebrate the impact of farm to school programs on children, producers, and communities. Since 2012, I have directed USDA’s Farm to School Program, guiding the work of a small but enthusiastic team at the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS).
USDA Blog " National Hunger Hotline
USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, a federally-funded, state-administered program, last year served more than 187 million meals to children in low-income areas to ensure that they continued to receive proper nutrition throughout the summer when schools were closed. But that number represents just a small fraction of the children who are eligible to receive summer meals. Many families may not have taken advantage of the program because they didn’t know where meals were served near them.
Photo-Worthy Meals
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and in the digital age we have ample opportunity to document and broadcast every moment, meeting and meal. We have all seen those unappetizing photos of food served at school that quickly go viral. A lonesome whole wheat bun atop a sad fish fillet; a mysterious-looking meat mixture served next to an apple. It’s natural to ask, “Is this what they serve for lunch!?” No, it’s really not.
Nationwide Census on Farm to School Activities Shows Promising Results
Posted by Deborah Kane, National Director, USDA Farm to School Program in Food and Nutrition Farming Feb 21, 2017 USDA Census shows healthy habits are taking root across the country. When students have experiences such as tending a school garden or visiting a farm they’ll be more likely to make healthy choices in the cafeteria.
