Winnipeg Blue Bombers add nine new players in CFL Canadian Draft
The Bombers charted a new direction in the CFL Canadian Draft—possibly with a nod to the upcoming rule changes. At fourth overall, the Bombers selected defensive end Nuer Gatkuoth from Wake Forest. The Edmonton native played high school football in Toronto and then his senior season south of the border. Listed at 6-foot-3, 237 pounds, Gatkuoth has agreed to attend mini-camp with the Denver Broncos, per 3DownNation. which would would delay his availability to the Bombers.

The Multiple Benchmarks of a Post-LIBOR World
SOFR and CSR are key ingredients in the alphabet soup of solutions for interest rates. Despite that, LIBOR did have its virtues. Among those were familiarity and widespread adoption.

4FRNT Skis Founder Matt Sterbenz Returns To The Iconic Brand
When Matt Sterbenz was forced to sell the ski brand he founded in 2002, he had one overarching desire for 4FRNT skis: He wanted the brand he created to live on. Winnipeg Blue Bombers select nine players in CFL Draft
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers made the biggest splash at the 2025 CFL Draft. And they built the drama by waiting until their third pick to do it. With the 18th pick, the Bombers drafted quarterback Taylor Elgersma from Wilfred Laurier. Elgersma (6-foot-5, 235 lbs) won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2024 as the top player in U Sports football. He led Laurier to the Vanier Cup game, throwing for more than 10,000 yards and 78 touchdowns over his career.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are flying in some relief from their injury troubles. 680 CJOB has confirmed the team is bringing free agent quarterbacks Jake Dolegala and Bryan Scott to Winnipeg. Neither has signed with the team, as the Bombers are considering how they will replace Chris Streveler. Streveler is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in the Banjo Bowl. He posted the news on Instagram that he tore three of the four major ligaments in his knee.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers trade down to select receiver in 2nd round of CFL Draft
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were looking to fill some small holes with their 10 picks in this year’s draft. In the end they got the star of the CFL Combine, the smallest player in the draft, and a top-10 prospect from the CFL Central Scouting list. The Bombers started the night with the 8th overall pick. They packaged it with their 3rd-round pick in a trade with the Calgary Stampeders. The Bombers got back the 13th and 14th picks.
Right Here, Right Now Original
The Incredible, Amazing, Fortuitous Moment of Being There When the Rope Drops By Derek Taylor “I don’t want to go to ski team today,” he said as I flipped on the light. It was Saturday, and finally forecast to be sunny after a week of storms. I don’t remember how much fell that night, but it was snowing pretty hard at the end of the day, about the time my 10-year-old followed some ski team buddies into the woods and got himself tangled up in a scrub oak.
5 big numbers for the Bombers home opener Original
It took the Bombers eight games last season to find their running game in 2022. Is it ready to go this season with Brady Oliveira being limited in camp? By Derek Taylor Global News The Bombers open their season Friday at IG Field (7:30 p.m. start, 5:30 p.m. pre-game show on 680 CJOB). Here are five numbers I think are important to the home opener versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. On average, Dalton Schoen’s targets were 19.1 yards downfield.
ANALYSIS: The best of CFL free agency’s first week
The biggest and best moves from each team in CFL free agency, and a 'but' to consider as the 2023 season approaches. By Derek Taylor Global News One week of CFL free agency is done and now the waiting begins. That’s the beauty of the off-season. Anything is possible and everything can be analyzed and hypothesized between now and the start of the regular season. We have three long months to wait until we can see how Kenny Lawler looks back in the Bombers offence.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers GM got his work done early Original
Walters says the Bombers tried to deal for Lawler at the trade deadline in 2022, but couldn’t make it work with the Elks. Now they have him back, but at a significant cost. By Derek Taylor Global News You would think the opening day of free agency would be a busy day for a CFL General Manager. But with his work wrapped up, Bombers GM Kyle Walters spoke with the media a mere 90 minutes after the window opened.
Few free agent decisions left for Bombers Original
By Derek Taylor Global News As free agency opens Tuesday morning we don’t expect a lot of action on the Bombers front. And after a 15-win season plus a third straight Grey Cup appearance, why would you change much? The Bombers will add one of the top free-agent receivers in the CFL in Kenny Lawler. And they are expected to lose centre Michael Couture and defensive tackle Casey Sayles. Other than that, 20 starting spots on offense and defense appear to be the same as they were in 2022.
A Riders family affair
The extended Onyeka family continues to be good to the Riders. The team announced the signing of defensive back Kosi Onyeka Monday. Kosi is a cousin of Riders defensive back Godfrey Onyeka. And they are both cousins of former Riders linebacker Nakas Onyeka. 6-foot, 195-pound Kosi Onyeka joins the Riders as an undrafted free agent. He played three seasons for the University of Guelph, ending in 2021. The Riders also announced the signing of American defensive end David Kenney.
Riders add defensive lineman
The Riders have added to their defensive line for the coming season. The team signed American Miles Brown on Friday. The 24 year old was an undrafted free agent of the Arizona Cardinals in 2019. He played nine games for the team that season. He subsequently spent time with the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions. The 6’2″, 320 pounder will compete for a spot at defensive tackle in training camp.
Report: Riders receiver retiring
Terrell Jana is retiring from football, according to a report from TSN’s Farhan Lalji. While he still remains on the #Riders roster formally, it appears as though Terrell Jana has decided to retire after one @cfl season. Was the top receiver selected in 2021 #CFLDraft, 17th overall. Played in 2 games & caught 1 pass. Bright kid with a lot of interests. @CFLonTSN — Farhan Lalji (@FarhanLaljiTSN) February 16, 2022 Jana was the first receiver taken in the 2021 CFL draft (2nd round, 17th overall).
Riders sign new QB
The Riders have added QB Jake Dolegala to their roster. The 25 year old spent the 2019 season with the Cincinnati Bengals after not being drafted. Over the last two seasons he’s been with the Patriots, Packers and Dolphins. Dolegala is listed at 6-foot-7, 242 pounds. He threw for more than 8,000 yards at Central Connecticut State with 48 touchdowns. He joins Cody Fajardo and Mason Fine as quarterbacks on the Riders roster. Paxton Lynch is on the team’s Suspended list.
Riders re-sign Jordan Herdman-Reed
The Riders have re-upped a valuable member of their linebacking corps. Justin Herdman-Reed has signed on for a second season in green. The 27 year old played 15 games last season–including playoffs–making six tackles and five more special teams tackles. Herdman-Reed provides Canadian depth behind last-year’s starter Micah Teitz. And fits the Riders desire to have quality linebackers for special teams.
Riders add big Canadian receiver
The Riders started day 2 of free agency by adding to their receiving corps. They signed national wide receiver Wesley Lewis to a contract. The Redblacks drafted Lewis in 2019. He played 11 games for them over two seasons, making three catches. The 27 year old stands 6-foot-5, 218lbs. He adds another big Canadian receiver to the Riders, joining 6-foot-5 Justin McInnis, 6-foot-4 Kian Schaffer-Baker.
Report: Riders adding two star linebackers
With free agency opening late this morning, the Riders appear ready to add to their linebacking corps. The first is a familiar face–Derrick Moncrief. TSN’s Farhan Lalji reports that the team has agreed to a deal to bring him back. Moncrief spent his first three seasons in green before going to the NFL. The 28 year old played with the Elks last season. As well, the Riders have agreed to a contract with Darnell Sankey, according to TSN’s Dave Naylor.
Riders steal from Stampeders
The Riders have added to their defense by subtracting from one of their rivals. The Riders announced the signing of linebacker Darnell Sankey. No terms of the deal were announced. Sankey made his CFL debut in 2021. The 27 year old led the league in tackles–include two separate 12-tackle games. He added a sack and a forced fumble. Voters chose Sankey as a West Division All Star for the season. The California native joins a linebacking corps including Larry Dean and Micah Teitz.
Riders’ Woodard off to NFL
The Riders have released defensive end Jonathan Woodard so he can pursue a job in the NFL. The 6-foot-5, 271 pounder was a revelation on the Riders defense. He finished second in the CFL in sacks in the regular season (10), behind teammate AC Leonard. Woodard added another sack in the 2021 Western Semifinal. He played in all 16 regular- & post-season games in 2021. Woodard burst onto the scene with three sacks in the Riders Week 2 game vs. Hamilton. He added two more the next week against Ottawa.
Riders re-sign LB Larry Dean
The Riders have re-signed three-time All-Star linebacker Larry Dean. Dean was a huge get for the Riders when they signed him before the 2021 season. Unfortunately, Dean tore his Achilles two days before the start of training camp. He remained in Saskatchewan with his teammates during his rehab from the injury. The 33 year old came to the CFL in 2016, spending his first three years with the Ticats. In 2019 he joined the Edmonton Elks and was the team’s nominee for Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
Lauther achieves his goal, remains with Riders
After years of hard work and sacrifice, Riders kicker Brett Lauther finally got what he’s been wanting–a multi-year contract. The Riders announced Lauther’s two-year contract extension on Saturday, ensuring that the 31 year old will be back for a fourth (and fifth) season in green. “It’s huge for me,” Lauther says. “This is something I told my agent out of the gate, I wanted to get a multi-year deal if possible.
Riders re-sign Picton, Onyeka
Regina’s Mitch Picton had his best CFL season ever in 2021. He’ll have a chance to follow it up in 2022. The Riders announced they have signed the wide receiver to a contract extension. It will be his third CFL season. Picton appeared in 10 regular-season games in 2021, catching 25 passes for 218 yards. He scored his first career touchdown in Week 2 against the Ticats. The Riders have also signed defensive back Godfrey Onyeka to an extension.
Riders co-ordinators sign contract extensions
The coaches leading the Riders on both sides of the ball will be in Saskatchewan a little longer. Defensive Co-ordinator Jason Shivers and Offensive Co-ordinator Jason Maas have signed contract extension through the 2023 season, the Riders announced today. They were among a flurry of front-office moves the club revealed Thursday. Shivers enters his third CFL season in charge of the defence. It will be Maas’s second season leading the offense.

Riders safety off to Olympics
As a kid, Jay Dearborn’s dream was to play at the World Junior Hockey Championship. He never lived out that dream, but he’s done plenty more. Dearborn played in nine games at safety and linebacker for the Riders, including starting in the Western Final. And just a couple months later he’s off to the Olympics in four-man bobsleigh. Dearborn will be the brakeman for one of Canada’s three teams.
Moore glad to have Riders support
Riders receiver Kyran Moore figures it’ll take nine months to recover from his knee injury. And he’s happy to know the teams is behind him all the way back. The Riders re-signed Moore last week to a reported 1-year deal worth $120-thousand. It’s something he wasn’t sure he would get when he injured his knee. “The first thing I was thinking of when I got hurt was ‘I’m a free agent. I wonder if anybody’s going to take me,’ says Moore.
McInnis re-signs with Riders
The Riders first-round pick from 2019 will stick around a while longer. The club signed receiver Justin McInnis to a contract extension on Monday. No terms were released. McInnis was the 6th-overall pick in the 2019 CFL Draft. He’s played 20 games for the Riders, making 15 catches for 232 yards. He was on the roster for six games this past season, dealing with a hamstring injury. McInnis is the second receiver to re-sign before free agency, joining Kyran Moore.
Riders re-sign offensive lineman
Try as he did to fight through a shoulder injury, Terran Vaughn couldn’t play for the Riders in 2021. It appears he’ll be back on the field this season. The Riders announced Tuesday that Vaughn signed a one-year extension. No terms were disclosed. The 27 year old tried to play last season with a brace on his left shoulder, but was ultimately unsuccessful. His surgery in August ended his season before it began. Vaughn started 15 games at left tackle and one at right tackle in 2019.
Riders release WR Brayden Lenius
The Riders have released WR Brayden Lenius with a little over a month to free agency. Lenius has been taking workouts with NFL teams and this move by the Riders allows him an extra month of freedom to try his luck. The 25 year old had a career-best season in 2021. He led the Riders with 4 receiving touchdowns and added 37 catches for 471 yards.
Riders re-sign two, add one more
The Riders have three more players under contract–one who may come as a bit of a surprise. That is receiver Paul McRoberts. He returns for a third season with the Riders after a bumpy ride in 2021. McRoberts started in Week 3 vs. the Redblacks. He caught all four of his targets for 42 yards and added a carry for nine yards. The next week he was off the roster, replaced by Ricardo Louis.
2022 Riders schedule announced
The CFL revealed its full schedule for the 2022 season, and the Riders will see plenty of their division rivals. The Labour Day/Banjo Bowl series returns to its regular place in the schedule–Weeks 13 and 14. And a third game will be Week 17 in Winnipeg. As well, the Riders will wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home series against the Stampeders. It all leads up to the Grey Cup at Mosaic Stadium on Sunday, November 20.
No Riders make CFL All-Star team
The CFL announced its All-Star team on Wednesday. And no Riders were voted in. Voters left defensive tackle Micah Johnson off in favour of the Stampeders Mike Rose and the Argos Shawn Oakman. And cornerback Nick Marshall missed out as voters chose the Bombers DeAundre Alford and Ticats Jumal Rolle. The last time that no Rider made the CFL All-Star team was 2016. Regina native and former Saskatchewan Huskie Pat Neufeld did make the team at guard.
Multiple Riders snubbed for West Division All Stars
The Riders, with the second-best record in the division, had only two players voted to the West Division All-Star team. They are Defensive Tackle Micah Johnson and Cornerback Nick Marshall. Johnson led the CFL with eight tackles for loss, dominating in the interior of the defensive line. Marshall tied for 4th in the division with 3 interceptions. Defensive ends AC Leonard and Jonathan Woodard led the league with 11 and 10 sacks respectively.
Fajardo wins Riders MOP award
For the second straight season, Riders QB Cody Fajardo has won the team’s Most Outstanding Player award. Fajardo has thrown for 2,970 yards and 14 touchdowns in 13 games. He’s also the top rushers among CFL quarterbacks with 468 yards. The Riders won 20 games with Fajardo at QB–faster than any other quarterback in team history. Loucheiz Purifoy won the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. Purifoy has played 12 games, switching between halfback, safety and SAM linebacker to fill in for injuries.
More injury trouble for Riders
While one player could be coming off the six-game injured list, more Riders may soon take his place. Defensive Tackle Garrett Marino is a “maybe” to play this week, according to Riders Head Coach Craig Dickenson. Marino just finished his spell on the six-game list with an injured knee. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Riders don’t know how bad Receiver Kyran Moore’s knee injury is. Moore left last weekend’s game and was spotted on crutches on the sideline.
Report: Riders sign WR Duke Williams
One of the CFL’s best deep receivers in the last decade is reportedly on the way to Saskatchewan. TSN CFL Insider Dave Naylor reports that the Riders have agreed to a contract with wide receiver D’haquiile “Duke” Williams. Williams played the last two seasons in the NFL after two seasons with the Elks in 2017-18. The club has not commented on Naylor’s report. Williams led the CFL in both receiving yards (1,579) and receiving touchdowns (11) in 2018.
Changes coming to Riders secondary
Friday’s games marks the middle of the Riders season. And for it, it appears there will be changes in the middle of their defense. Loucheiz Purifoy lined up at safety for Monday’s practice. He swapped positions with Elie Bouka, who took over at halfback. Purifoy has starter games at halfback, corner, and SAM linebacker in his six-year CFL career. And he appears set to add another position to the list. “The nice thing is Louch knows every position on the field,” says Head Coach Craig Dickenson.
Fajardo will start vs. Argos
Riders QB Cody Fajardo has recovered well enough from his concussion to start on Friday. The Riders list Fajardo as the starter on the depth chart, released Thursday morning. Isaac Harker–who had more reps in practice than usual this week–remains the backup. Safety Mike Edem (wrist) and Defensive Tackle Garrett Marino (knee) are on the 6-game injured list after suffering injuries in the Banjo Bowl. Elie Bouka will get his first start of the season at Safety.
Fans flock to Riders scrimmage
The Riders Green and White scrimmage was the closest the team will get to game action before the season opener. And it showed the Riders still have some work to do. “Initially, I would say we need to get in better shape,” says Head Coach Craig Dickenson. “I think that was the one thing I noticed. We had a lot of guys that their tongues were dragging after one quarter.” The team had planned to play four 10-minute quarters of offense versus defense.
Rider fans return to Mosaic
For the first time since the West Final, fans were in Mosaic Stadium to see the Riders. Sure it was only Day 8 of training camp, and no score was kept, it still felt like a special day for the players. “You could tell a lot of guys had some juice,” says QB Cody Fajardo. “Especially as you get through a week of training camp, there was a lot more juice in practice. It was a little bit more competitive than I think anyone expected.
Maas promises lots of Fajardo in ’21
Offensive coordinator Jason Maas promises and expects a lot of work from Cody Fajardo in the next three weeks. And then the 19 weeks of the CFL season. Fajardo is one of four quarterbacks (soon to be five with Monday’s arrival of Paxton Lynch) in camp. But Fajardo will be significantly busier than the rest. “The difference for him will be the first six days of camp he’ll get about 350 reps to everybody else’s 120,” says Maas. “And we have to split the reps between the other quarterbacks.
Riders camp begins in the shadow of injuries
Riders QB Cody Fajardo was on the field for Thursday’s fateful practice. “Honestly, it felt like it was straight out of a movie,” the Riders QB says. “I’ve been here for a year and we’ve done (that drill) multiple times and nothing like that has happened.” Four players tore an Achilles tendon doing a single drill on Thursday. Linebacker Larry Dean, defensive end Freddie Bishop, defensive back Nelson Lokombo and running back Jonathan Femi-Cole are all out for the season.
