Universal child care is a win for New Mexico

There is so much good news about Universal Free Child Care in New Mexico that I’m puzzled by the handful of people who seem determined to focus on why we can’t do it — whether through lawsuits or social media criticism. Take Duke Rodriguez, unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor in the 2026 primary. Rodriguez recently filed a lawsuit challenging the state’s implementation of Universal Free Child Care, arguing it was rolled out before being fully codified by the Legislature.

I am furious

Two days ago, I filled up my gas tank. Seventy-eight dollars. More than $5.20 a gallon for medium-grade gasoline. I was furious. Then I arrived home to learn my Medicare supplement policy through AARP United Healthcare is set to increase 18%. Again, I was furious. Not for myself. I can absorb those increases. But many New Mexico families cannot. They still have to drive to work, haul supplies, take children to school or travel long distances for medical care.
