Asahi Shimbun, Tokyo - on the international copy desk.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My grandmother had one, so, sure. but never in a newsroom.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Bill O'Reilly

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Connecting the dots for readers and striking that balance of leaving them better informed and yet more curious with every sentence.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

With clarity. But even if your pitch is perfect and you don't end up delivering on time, your next perfect pitch will probably remain unread

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Whatever suits the assignment - too many to name and too rapidly changing for any kind of coherent list.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because it's the best job in the world.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work hard. Then work harder. No one has time for an ego & all the insecurity that goes with it.
