The Cigarette Butt You Can’t See
We’ve all seen it: a car window rolls down, a cigarette butt arcs into the street, and we immediately recognize it as pollution. The act is visible, personal, and undeniable. What makes that moment so viscerally powerful is that we see it. We can assign a face and a moment to the act. Our brains are wired to respond to visible, proximate damage. But what about the harms of modern technology that accumulate quietly over time, hidden from view?

The Secret to Getting More from Your Association: Start Giving
I've been listening to conversations among in-plant leaders lately, and there's a pattern that's been troubling me. When the topic of professional associations comes up, the first question I hear is almost always: "What's in it for me?" or "What do I get if I join?" Don't get me wrong – it's natural to want to understand the value proposition of any investment, including association membership.
In-Plant Success: Leading with Hospitality By Dwayne Magee
Dedicated to someone I consider the Master of Hospitality – Richard Griffin Hospitality is both a value and a practice. As a value, it’s a mindset of generosity, care, and attentiveness to others. As a practice, it’s the intentional act of making people feel seen, supported, and welcome.
Where to Aim When You Can't Spend a Dime
As another fiscal year winds down for some printers, many are facing the same reality: rising costs, tighter budgets, and no new equipment on the horizon. You’re not alone. Many print shops are scraping by with what they have – and still producing award-winning, mission-critical work. So how do you set meaningful goals for FY26 when there’s no money to spend? You aim where dollars don’t matter: your people, your processes, your purpose.

Unlocking Potential: Embracing NeuroDiversity in the Print Industry By Dwayne Magee
The term neurodiversity was coined in 1998 by an Australian sociologist named Judy Singer. Singer, who is autistic, introduced the term to promote the idea that neurological differences such as autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and others are natural variations of the human brain rather than disorders that need to be cured.
The Vital Role of Printing in the Civil Rights Movement
William Lloyd Garrison, the famous abolitionist and journalist of the 1800s, believed that the printed word was a powerful tool for effective communication. Printing allowed him to boldly and broadly disseminate his beliefs. Using newspapers, letters, and pamphlets, he diligently went about the work of advocating for social change and an immediate end to slavery. Slave owners too, understood how important printing was to the abolitionist cause.

Digging Deeper: Harnessing the Grit of Gum Arabic to Inspire Your Next Move By Dwayne Magee
I was recently reading a book about ink and how it is formulated. As often happens when I am reading dull, informational text, my mind drifted and I found myself researching something far more compelling. In this case, I stumbled upon, of all things, a French guidebook for medieval housewives. Now here me out – this will make sense as you read on. The book was called “Le Ménagier” and it was written to instruct women on proper behavior in marriage and in running a household.
The Enduring Power of a Printed Image
The first Thanksgiving is one of America's earliest and most enduring legends: Pilgrims and tribesman of the Wampanoag Nation peacefully celebrating a successful harvest together. It took place in Plymouth Massachusetts more than 400 years ago. But the relationship between colonists and Native Americans was complex, marked by a mixture of cooperation, cultural tension, and conflict. The First Indian War is considered one of the deadliest conflicts in American history.
Mastering Leadership Excellence By Dwayne Magee
I am struggling, I lack confidence, and I am ineffective as a leader. I am thriving, I am confident, and I am a successful leader. Which of those two sentences best describes you? Are you like me, somewhere in the middle? Striving to do better? Many years ago, my wife convinced me that the fall is a great time to reflect on the year and then set some goals for the coming year. As I move closer to retirement, I feel like I am getting better at this. In 2024 I hope to run more, write more, and read more.
300 Years Ago Today
He was his father's youngest son, one of 17 children born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. It was decided early on that he would learn candle and soap making. It was assumed he would eventually take over the family business. At age 12 he was dutifully cutting wicks and filling molds. He was extremely unhappy. Fortunately, at about that same time, his brother James returned home from a trip to England.

Ray Chambers Made Me a Better Manager
In May of 2005, I stepped away from 17 years in commercial printing and accepted a position as the director for print and mail at Messiah College in central Pennsylvania. Two years later, I met Ray Chambers.
Are You ‘All In?’
At the school where I work, August is usually our busiest month of the year. We are typically printing course materials for the fall semester and promotional items for upcoming events. We are preparing the campus with signage and producing business cards for new employees. We print recruiting materials for our admissions office, and we assist our alumni office as they prepare for homecoming week. Our package volumes skyrocket in the campus post office, and outgoing bulk mail surges.
Making Print Procurement Go More Smoothly
Your in-plant has finally been given the right of first refusal. Now all printing and copying done on behalf of your entire organization will be filtered through your hands. You are not only a printer, you are now a print buyer. And who better than you? Your organization is wise to have entrusted this purchasing power to someone with your wisdom and experience. When the in-house printer is buying the outsourced printing, everybody wins.
Reflections On Being IPMA's President- By Dwayne Magee
Posted by Jan Portwood on Dec 5, 2018 in Blogs | 0 comments Reflections On Being IPMA’s President- By Dwayne Magee It seems hard to believe, but in just a few weeks my time as IPMA President will be coming to a close. Who should produce print collateral for universities in-plant or outside firm?
According to data from nearly 100 North American colleges, the average cost to recruit a student has now surpassed the $3,000 mark. Roughly 15% of that money is devoted to print collateral and direct mail. The only higher data point in the recruiting budget is employee salaries and benefits. Print collateral utilized for recruiting represents just a small portion of higher education’s overall printing and mailing budget.
Advancing the Cause of Sustainability
According to data from a recent study of private colleges and universities, the average cost to recruit one student for these institutions is now about $3,350 dollars. Roughly 15% of that budget is money devoted to print collateral and direct mail.
Your in-plant's lobby should tell the story of what happens in your building
They called him “Tricky Beam.” He was my great uncle. He was a schemer. He earned his name “tricking” people out of their money. His father passed away when he was in his early twenties and left him about 80 acres of valuable real estate. In order to supplement a drinking habit, he sold off the land in one- and two-acre lots. His trick was to sell the same plots of ground several times over. It is estimated that from his original inheritance of 80 acres, he sold approximately 560 of them.
