A century ago, in the mid-1920s, Clarence Pickard taught agricultural economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute as part of the Extension Service. Fifty years later, Pickard returned to Southwest Virginia with the first group of Bikecentennial riders who left Jamestown in May 1976. Beyond the pleasure and challenge of riding long distances, Pickard devoted himself to the mission of encouraging safe cycling.

Fifty years ago, Virginia’s Historic Triangle was the eastern point for the Bikecentennial, a cross-country ride organized in celebration of America’s 200th anniversary in 1976. While Jamestown hosted a ceremonial launch with speeches in May, the Triangle was not nearly as successful in welcoming cyclists who concluded trips later in the summer. The successes and shortcomings of these efforts provide encouraging as well as cautionary lessons to apply in planning for cyclists in 2026.
