Merit-based and colorblind: The Pentagon’s cover story for purging Black officers
I entered U.S. military service in 1964, right as Vietnam was escalating. Despite the Civil Rights Movement, roughly 31 percent of the hundreds of thousands mostly male recruits sent to the Marines and Army in 1965 were Black — this when Black men were just 10.8 percent of the U.S. male population. Once in Vietnam, men like me, Black men, were killed in combat during that period at a staggering 25 percent rate — nearly twice what our population share would predict.

2023-24's Top 50 Collegiate Wrestlers: #11-#15
What has become a preseason staple for us at InterMat, counting down the top 50 wrestlers for the upcoming season, is back for 2023-24. With a large chunk of sixth and seventh-year seniors gone, there is plenty of turnover from last year’s list to this one. That makes for a lot of fun and perhaps some spirited debates. Like last year, the third iteration of this feature will show five wrestlers at a time, counting down from #50 to #1.

Did Mississippi Sanction High School Wrestling?
Yesterday, news made the rounds of social media stating that Mississippi had finally sanctioned wrestling at the high school level. For boys, that would make it all 50 US states that currently sanction the sport. It sounds like a reason for celebration; however, it's not entirely accurate. Earlier today, I spoke with Lonnie Tillman, an Associate Director with the MHSAA (Mississippi High School Activities Association), Mississippi's governing body.

From the machine gun to motor cars to insulin, Earl H. Smith writes about some of the world's most important inventions to come out of Maine. AUGUSTA, Maine — Thomas Edison once said, "To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk." Both are common in Maine, which is why writer Earl Smith believes our state generated so many great inventions.

Earl Smith, Site Editor 5/9/2021 earl@intermatwrestle.com To celebrate Mother's Day, InterMat sat down with five prominent mothers in the wrestling community, Allyson Schwab, Kaille Grey, Lyndsey Beasley, Jaime Dubuque, and McKayla Engel. All five are married to DI coaches, as well. These women talk about how and when they met their husbands and some difficulties involved with being the wife of a DI coach.

Lopsided win sends No. 2 Pearl River back to Region XXIII Championship Game
Posted: Mar 05, 2020 CLINTON, Miss. — No. 2 Pearl River left little doubt who should be in the Region XXIII Championship game after claiming a lopsided 81-54 victory over Hinds inside Mississippi College's A.E. Wood Coliseum on Thursday. "Coach told us to get out and run in transition because he didn't think they'd be able to get back and defend us, so the whole plan was to run and try to speed up the pace of the game," Pearl River forward Isaih Moore said.

BUSHNELL ON BOOKS: New releases from Maine authors
WINTERHILL Thomaston author Christopher Fahy is a man of many writing talents — fiction, nonfiction and poetry. “Winterhill” is his 14th novel, after last year’s “Foreverglades.” And while Foreverglades was a hilarious spoof about the Fountain of Youth, this book is a dark, suspenseful tale of fraud, deceit, greed and murder. Fahy spins a gripping yarn here, starkly revealing how desperate people can fall victim to the medical quackery and slick promotion of shysters and nutcases.
OFF RADAR: ‘Fireside Chats’ and ‘Water Village: The Story of Waterville, Maine’
“Fireside Chats” In the late 1980s, some journalists in Belfast decided it would be interesting — and instructive — to get some of the old folks in Waldo County to tell their stories. The subsequent column, “Fireside Chats,” written by Jeff Shula and illustrated with Peggy McKenna’s photographs, ran in the Republican Journal and Waldo Independent newspapers, and proved popular. Thirty years later, those stories now collected in the book “Fireside Chats” seem more important than ever.

Starbucks CEO May Jump Into Presidential Race
In what’s becoming a seasonal tradition nearly as predictable as the pumpkin-spice latte, the name of Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has again been floated as a potential presidential candidate. Starbucks is staying officially mum, but state Democratic operatives said they’re skeptical, and there’s been no sign that the politically engaged coffee titan is planning to stir the 2016 presidential pot.
