Photos from Croatia and Serbia For 22 months, Zagreb has been more than the city on my temporary digital nomad residency permit. It was my first home outside the United States—the European capital city where my lifelong dream of living internationally became an unexpectedly delightful reality. I am not leaving because Zagreb no longer feels like home. I am leaving because my permit is expiring, as I always knew it would. This does not make saying goodbye any easier.

I have a few reflections about the 22 months I’ve lived in Zagreb, Croatia, including lessons learned and things I wished I had done differently. Growing up in the United States, it was instilled in me that it was the greatest country in the world.

I stood near Republic Square in Belgrade, Serbia on a warm afternoon, thinking it would be a good time to finally breathe a sigh of relief and celebrate. I decided to make an appointment at a salon near my Airbnb to have my hair done by a stylist named Ana. I also bought a bottle of The Morava from Serbia’s The Sparkling Winery from a local shop, FinoVino. Living the Tasty Life is a reader-funded publication.
