There is a particular humility available only to adults who have attempted to learn an instrument and discovered, within the first hour, that mastery is not intuitive. That has been my experience, at least. The accordion, that least sympathetic of instruments to a beginner’s ambitions, teaches this lesson with unusual efficiency. You may know and love the accordion from the works of Pauline Oliveros. I came to it through inheritance of a sort.

Before Dawes took the stage, the crowd was surprisingly sparse, but within minutes the venue transformed into a packed house. What started as a scattered audience quickly became a sea of eager concertgoers, ready for an evening that would blend thoughtful songwriting and blues-infused rock.

His sense of cosmic and emotional dread can sit with you the way one sits with a long drone or a slowly evolving tone, allowing meaning to accumulate.
