Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for Coast Guard publications.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes

How is social media changing news?

Fundamentally. It's changing society, and "brand journalism" driven by this trend is powerful but is hurting the idea of "news."

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

E-mail.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Word. And time. Also a big fan of WordPress.

What's your favorite social network?

I used to like Facebook, but I hate it now. Despise it, actually.

Why did you become a journalist?

I started off as a military journalist, and I always wanted to do freelance work. It took many years to finally get to it.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Several pieces exposing the problems with Fox News.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Find another line of work.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime via e-mail.
