California age-appropriate design rules: Similar principles and subtle differences
Lawmakers share the goal of protecting young people from harm. But the laws that jurisdictions enact often pursue their objectives in different ways, such as by establishing different age thresholds around whom the laws protect, different criteria regarding who must comply, disparate roles for parents and their children, and dissimilar standards to which companies must adhere. The UK Code, which one of the authors of this article architected and implemented, has been in force since 2021.

Cybersecurity & Data Privacy
Business leaders know that in an increasingly connected world, the future is digital, with CEOs worldwide citing cyber risk as a chief concern. Attacks can pose a threat to finances, operations and reputation, compounded by potentially serious charges from law enforcement agencies all over the world. A rigorous approach to cybersecurity and data protection is essential to counter the malicious threats emerging and evolving in response to the relentless drumbeat of digitization.
Privacy in the Big Data world: Is it dead or alive?
Collecting, storing and sharing personal data has become ubiquitous with the digital age. It allows organizations to know where we are, what we like and who we’re interacting with. So, it’s unsurprising that many people believe data privacy is now completely dead. But is it premature to mourn its passing? There is no doubt that an increased adoption of digital technology has resulted in organizations having much more data available to analyze.
Access to information gets boost with memorandum between UNESCO and International Conference of Information Commissioners
Building peace in the minds of men and women A tangible step towards formalizing and elevating existing cooperation to advance access to information was taken on 4 December 2020. Looking beneath the surface: why data sets need to be examined with X-ray vision
Back in late 2019, before Covid-19 became a global issue, data had already transformed the commercial landscape and established itself as a high value business asset. However, its associated social, ethical and commercial risks were quickly identified, and a raft of data protection legislation, such as GDPR and CCPA, was established in response. Since then, of course, we have been living through a pandemic, and that has changed everything.
Combatting COVID-19 through data: some considerations for privacy
There’s an often quoted line about knowing the past to understand the present. It came to mind this week, as I looked at the work we had been doing on contact tracing and location data in the context of COVID-19. Data protection law emerged in the UK out of a concern that the benefits of new technology could be lost if advances were not embraced by the population.
Facial recognition needs a statutory code
As far back as Sir Robert Peel, the powers of the police have always been seen as dependent on public support of their actions. It’s an ideal starting point as we consider uses of technology like live facial recognition. How far should we, as a society, consent to police forces reducing our privacy in order to keep us safe? That was the starting point to my office’s investigation into the trials of life facial recognition (LFR) by the Metropolitan Police Service and South Wales Police.
Blog: Live facial recognition technology - police forces need to slow down and justify its use
By Elizabeth Denham, Information Commissioner. As far back as Sir Robert Peel, the powers of the police have always been seen as dependent on public support of their actions. How far should we, as a society, consent to police forces reducing our privacy in order to keep us safe?
Going Unnoticed
Last week, I came across an interview with Elizabeth Denham on a Canadian website called The Walrus that was published in April. There are some interesting nuggets – Denham seems to out herself as a Remainer in the third paragraph (a tad awkward given that she has only enforced on the other side) and also it turns out that the Commissioner has framed pictures of herself taking on Facebook in her office.

May 8, 2018 by Michael McEvoy - Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC This year, as the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) mark Privacy Awareness Week, there couldn’t be a more important time to talk about the need to protect personal information. GDPR: The UK Information Commissioner writes to SMEs
By Elizabeth Denham, the UK Information Commissioner May 25 is a landmark in data protection history, as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect, replacing the 1988 Data Protection Act (DPA). As the UK’s Information Commissioner, I’m excited to be part of this seminal shift in the privacy landscape. Research suggests the SME sector is less prepared than others for the changes.
GDPR – setting the record straight on data breach reporting - Digital Leaders

The story of Damian Green’s porn-clogged computer has several facets, with a surprising number of them related to data protection. Whether it was a breach for former Deputy Commissioner Bob Quick to reveal that there was porn on the computer is hard to say for certain – I think Quick has a journalistic defence in revealing hypocrisy given that the Government is current waging a moralistic war on adult websites, but you are welcome to disagree.
GDPR: Trust, privacy and innovation
As the UK’s data protection regulator, it’s my job to protect the information rights of citizens and ensure that privacy is afforded the same consideration as innovation in today’s evolving digital economy. Just as innovation relies on consumer trust, the digital economy depends on the trust of consumers to engage with it. And as technology has evolved, both cyber security and data protection have moved up the agenda. Both have become inextricably linked.

Consent is not the ‘silver bullet’ for GDPR compliance By Elizabeth Denham, Information Commissioner. Last week I launched a series of blogs to bust some of the myths that have developed around the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

With no small amount of fanfare, the Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham recently announced a “formal” investigation into the use of data analytics for political purposes. The use of targeted ads in political campaigns – especially those where the Right triumphed – has been much in the headlines, and the ICO clearly feels the need to react.
Information Commissioner’s Opinion addresses privacy concerns on the use of live facial recognition technology in public places
By Elizabeth Denham, UK Information Commissioner. Facial recognition technology brings benefits that can make aspects of our lives easier, more efficient and more secure. The technology allows us to unlock our mobile phones, set up a bank account online, or go through passport control. But when the technology and its algorithms are used to scan people’s faces in real time and in more public contexts, the risks to people’s privacy increases.
