Tom Rich is legally blind. But as he looks out over Twin Reefs, near Inverloch on Victoria’s Bass Coast, he sees something quite other than a picturesque ocean beach. It is a 126-million-year-old river that fills his vision, one of many that crisscrossed a rift valley yawning open on Australia’s southern flank as it began the long process of tearing away from Antarctica. As rivers do, this one flooded from time to time, and, in so doing, created favourable opportunities for fossil formation.
