Early voting is a success. Why are towns reconsidering the system? | The Day
Early voting is a success. Why are towns reconsidering the system? Two years and three election cycles after the debut of early voting, Connecticut municipalities are rethinking the commitment. With less than a week to go before Election Day, the Secretary of State reported Thursday that 305,000 residents had already cast ballots — dwarfing the 190,000 early voters recorded during the entire early voting period for the 2025 municipal election.

Santoro for the 37th | The Day
I head Pollinator Pathway East Lyme Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the use of native plants to create biodiversity. Over the course of the last several years I have come to know Anne Santoro through the organization’s partnering with the Town of East Lyme. Silence tells us everything | The Day
The New York Times reported that less than 1% of recent spending on Republican ads in congressional races paid for commercials that included Donald Trump’s name. Among the Republican candidates asking for my support this November, I have not seen a single mention of the elephant in the room in any advertisements. One has to ask why. Considering the effect the current administration has had on our country and our personal lives, what should we believe that silence tells us?

Potpourri on democracy | The Day
Serbia and Hungary just voted out their authoritarian leaders and Brazil ran Flávio Bolsonaro out of the country. Meanwhile 34% of Americans embrace lawbreaking, grifting, bullying, warmongering authoritarianism. That urinates on them and tells them it's raining. Here, white grievance and greed trump moral, democratic values. AI is making billions for the super-wealthy, while we struggle to buy gas/groceries, and wait — like sheep — for our jobs to be eliminated. Or worse, for AI to kill us all.

The middle-class affordability paradox: Wealthy on paper, squeezed in real life | The Day
MINNEAPOLIS — Americans have never been richer. Personal wealth has more than doubled in the past decade, in the second quarter, Federal Reserve data shows. The most affluent Americans hold a disproportionate share of that wealth, though. For the majority in the middle, much of what they have is tied up in homes and retirement accounts — money that can’t easily pay for a roof repair, medical bills or kids’ sports fees. That’s the crucial difference between wealth and cash flow.
