Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
My first paid job was with James Madison University's newspaper, The Breeze. I started as a staff writer and worked my way to a News Editor.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! I own one. It was a gift from my best friend, given to me the year I first told my family I wanted to be a writer.
How is social media changing news?
Everything is immediate. Breaking news is delivered quicker and more often, and updates are easy to distribute.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist means you have a love of communication and truth. It means you have a drive to share stories that haven't been heard yet.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter! It's more authentic, more real than other platforms. Plus, I can see jokes and news all at once.
Why did you become a journalist?
I became a journalist in part because a high school writing teacher pointed out my strength is nonfiction -- a love for journalism followed.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was only in it for one semester due to scheduling complications, so I was still writing the entry-level stories, like on students who ski.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
While in college, I covered the legacy of a beloved James Madison University administrator's upcoming retirement after decades on campus.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Stay hungry. In times of stress, remember how badly you wanted to be where you are now.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
While reporting in college, I was told a local resident had lived his entire life without a SSN due to a mix-up after his at-home birth.
What's your favorite drink?
Either a hot coffee or (if I'm feeling fancy) a lavender lemonade.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In my free time, I'm most often found with a cup of coffee in hand and either a good book or whatever show I haven't caught up on yet.
