CAUTION: This article references natural disasters and trauma. There is that moment etched in a person’s mind that is never forgotten. That moment when the waiting ends and the outcome is known. Your worst fears are confirmed. And the ache becomes reality. The names of your loved ones are spoken. Their loss is confirmed. What was once hope becomes grief. This is where lament lives. Biblical lament is not despair. It is faithful grief voiced in the presence of God. The psalmists did not hide their pain.

My seminary education at Baylor University’s Truett Theological Seminary was world-class in several areas, but especially in preaching. Looking back, the professors who taught those courses formed me more than the material they assigned. Professors who formed my preaching My first preaching course was taught by Joel Gregory, the famed pulpiteer with a booming voice and oratory flare. He emphasized careful exegesis and a repeatable approach to sermon preparation.
