Eric Bowling’s Biography

Born and raised in Edmonton, I initially went to school to study Biology and Paleontology, however I found the actual lifestyle of those careers less appealing than I had imagined. Over the course of the last decade I have worked alternatively as a journalist and as a labourer in the Alberta job market, which has given me a very well rounded perspective of the two bookends of society.

I was drawn into the news industry because of my deep love of learning. So far, it has been an exciting journey…

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paid gig was a nine-day military exercise in Wainwright, Alta. I got to ride in a Griffon helicopter sideways with open doors!

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Toss up between Peter Parker, April O Neil and Tintin.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A dedication to honesty. Sometimes, to uphold that dedication takes a great deal of valour and a good sense of honour.

Alberta Weekly News Association 2017 Photographic Award

2017 - Best Spot News Photo - Third place

While working on a story Aug. 2, I heard an alert on the police scanner about a vehicle fire in the hamlet of Vimy and raced out to get a photo. I ended up getting to the scene sooner than the fire department and caught this photo of Ian Mitchell trying to stop the flames of his car from spreading to his fence with a garden hose.
