New cars have so many computers controlling so many things they have become computers and only incidentally machines. There are a number of problems with this that go beyond the subjective dislike some people (me among them) have for excessive computerism, to coin a neologism. (They’re putting little computers in toothbrushes. It is out-of-hand.) As regards cars, the problem with too much computerism is that computers are comparatively short-lived things.

The least expensive new car you can still buy is also probably one of the least well-known small cars. It is not the Honda Civic. It is not the Toyota Corolla. It is not the Hyundai Elantra. It is the Elantra's Kia cousin, the K4. What It Is The K4 sedan is Kia's least expensive car and also the least expensive new car you can buy, period. It starts at $22,290 for the LX trim, which undercuts its Hyundai Elantra sibling -- which starts at $22,625 -- by $335.

Once upon a time – in the Before Time – your typical new car came with pretty much nothing. Everything except the shell, the glass, the drivetrain and the tires was optional. It was not thought to be a bad thing. People were free to buy as little – or as much – as suited their wants as well as their budgets. There were Cadillacs with everything – and Pintos and Chevettes with nothing. It was nice while it lasted.
