What was your first job as a journalist?
I worked at a weekly newspaper in Ashland, Pa., The Schuylkill Saturday.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Early and often! I prefer email, allowing for quick answers, but believe that a followup by a phone call is important. That's old-school now.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Samsung Galaxy, Chromebook, Google Docs, Office, iMovie, InDesign, Blox CMS, social, online database, court records, pen, paper.
Why did you become a journalist?
I wanted to effect change, but mostly I was convinced writing was my strongest talent.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I've been told by some in my community my work on addiction helped jumpstart dialogue and recovery efforts. I do think I helped.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be diverse in finding places to publish your work. Don't stick to one beat or one outlet.
What's your favorite drink?
Why have one favorite? Ice water (boring, I know), black coffee and cold beer.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Walking my dogs, in the kitchen or playing with my daughter.
