On the first weekend of my re-re-retirement, I went to an exhibit at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. It was called “Lives and Literacy in Ancient Egypt.” There were lots of brown papyrus and relatively few other artifacts, although one stood out. It was a small perfume bottle in the shape of a baboon made of faience, a ceramic the Egyptians invented. It was a shiny blue-green. There were also four realistic Roman-era funeral portraits.
