Iran Strikes Keep Oil Near $91
Oil crept higher as Iran claimed fresh strikes on US bases, while Saudi Arabia's smaller-than-expected hike to its flagship crude prices offset some concerns about market tightness. West Texas Intermediate futures swung between gains and losses to settle near $91 a barrel. Brent edged marginally lower to close near $95.50, snapping a three-day winning streak.
Oil Holds Above $90 as Fighting Flares
Oil steadied near the highest closing level in five weeks as fighting again raged between the US and Iran, renewing the threat to energy exports from the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate edged up marginally to settle above $90 a barrel, notching a three-session winning streak, while Brent ended the day over $95 for the first time since late July.
Oil Rises as US Targets Iran's Economy
Oil capped a weekly gain as traders awaited details of a US campaign to isolate Iran's economy, with no apparent end in sight to a conflict that has slashed Middle East exports. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday the administration would give details of the initiative next Monday after President Donald Trump described the push as an "economic D-day." The measures will target Tehran, and could also ensnare countries that deal with the Islamic Republic, possibly including China.
Iran Tensions Push Oil Near $94
Oil climbed to the highest in almost a month, as Donald Trump's threat to crush the Iranian economy further clouded the prospect of ending a war that has upended energy markets. Brent futures rose about 2% to settle under $94 a barrel. Measures announced by Trump could mean that any country allowing financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to aid Iran would face economic consequences.
Brent Pulls Back From $100
Brent crude prices retreated from $100 a barrel as oil was still managing to traverse Middle East trade routes despite the recent escalation in hostilities and White House saber rattling. The global benchmark fell roughly 4% on Friday to settle near $97 a barrel, its biggest one-day drop since late June. Crude slumped as traders digested a flurry of reports on the direction of stalled US and Iran peace talks, while momentum indicators signaled an overdue pause following oil's rapid rise.
Houthi Threat Squeezes Options for Oil Shippers
(Update) July 22, 2026, 3:00 PM GMT: Article updated throughout. Ships continue to turn away from the southern end of the Red Sea, after Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels announced an embargo on Saudi exports through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a narrow channel that has become a lifeline for oil exports since the beginning of the US-Israeli war with Iran.
Crude Extends Losses
Oil dipped as tankers become more overt in transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a sign that a much-anticipated rush of barrels is en route to quell one of the most severe supply shocks in history. West Texas Intermediate fell less than 1% to settle above $73 a barrel. Global benchmark Brent dipped about 1% to around $77 a barrel. Oil has fallen precipitously since the US and Iran inked an interim peace deal last week that promised to reopen the strait, a vital chokepoint for seaborne oil trade.
Oil Drops as Iran Talks Advance
Oil declined on signs of progress in US-Iran peace talks, including a waiver allowing some Iranian oil sales, bolstering hopes for a continued recovery in flows from the Persian Gulf. Brent crude fell about 3% to settle under $78 a barrel while West Texas Intermediate's most active contract settled below $74. The US issued a 60-day license allowing the sale of some Iranian oil and petroleum products, citing "productive talks" in Switzerland.
Oil Rises as Iran Talks Are Delayed
Oil gained on Friday as planned negotiations between the US and Iran were delayed and tanker traffic out of the Persian Gulf slowed. Brent futures traded above $80 a barrel in London as Iran delayed the start of negotiations over a permanent peace deal with the US amid an uptick in fighting in southern Lebanon. Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz thinned on Friday, a day after a surge in renewed oil flowed as the two countries vowed to lift a dual blockade.
Oil Slips as Hormuz Traffic Resumes
Oil dipped as the US and Iran's interim peace deal took effect and a flurry of tankers began transiting the Strait of Hormuz, paving the way to restart the flow of millions of barrels shut in by the conflict. West Texas Intermediate slipped below $74 before paring some losses, settling above $76. It flipped positive in post-trading hours. Global benchmark Brent rose slightly to settle near $80 a barrel.
Crude Extends Slide on Iran Accord
Oil sank to the lowest since early March after the US and Iran agreed to an interim deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though shipowners were still hunting for more details before committing to resuming transits. Brent tumbled 4.8% to settle at near $83 a barrel while West Texas Intermediate ended the day near $81. Prices are now more than 30% lower than their peak at the height of the war.
Oil Slips as Iran Talks Hang in Balance
Oil edged lower in thin trading on Friday with US-Iran peace negotiations on the ropes but still in play, leading some traders to peel back risk ahead of the weekend. West Texas Intermediate fell to settle near $102, though futures still notched a second straight weekly gain. The US benchmark finished up roughly 8% on the week. Uncertainty over future supply has contributed to sharp price swings, depressing trading volumes.
Crude Rises On Iran-US Standoff
Oil rose as peace negotiations between the US and Iran stalled, with both sides using blockades of the vital Strait of Hormuz to try and gain leverage in a seven-week war that has upended global energy markets. Brent futures settled above $101 a barrel in New York, the highest in two weeks, amid conflicting reports about plans to reschedule peace talks which have ultimately failed to materialize.
Oil Slides on OPEC Output Speculation
Oil fell after a report that the OPEC+ alliance will consider a fresh round of production increases when the group meets over the weekend. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 2.5% to settle just below $64, erasing its gain from Tuesday. The OPEC+ development was compounded by softer-than-expected US economic data that dented longer-term consumption expectations.
Crude Futures Edge Higher
Oil rose after a weekly report from the Energy Information Administration showed a 6 million-barrel decline in US inventories. Traders continued to monitor negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. West Texas Intermediate futures for both the September and October contracts edged higher, with the more-active October contract rising to settle near $63 a barrel. Brent futures strengthened to settle near $67 a barrel.
Crude Drops for Sixth Straight Session
Oil fell to its lowest settlement price in more than two months as traders awaited a planned meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump that may affect the availability of Russian crude supplies in the global market. West Texas Intermediate futures slipped to settle below $64 a barrel, marking the lowest settlement price since early June. The drop also sealed a six-session losing streak, the longest since December 2023.
OPEC to Boost Supply Even Faster with Larger August Hike
OPEC+ will increase oil production even more rapidly than expected next month, as the group led by Saudi Arabia seeks to capitalize on strong summer demand in its move to reclaim market share. Eight key alliance members agreed to raise supply by 548,000 barrels a day at a video conference on Saturday, putting the group on pace to unwind its most recent layer of output cuts one year earlier than originally outlined.
Trump U-Turns on China Buying Iranian Oil
President Donald Trump on Tuesday appeared to undermine years of US sanctions on Iran, giving its biggest customer China the green light to carry on buying its oil as he seeks to bolster a ceasefire with Israel.

OPEC+ Talks Hit Stalemate
OPEC+ is no closer to resolving the deadlock over oil-output quotas for some African members that has already forced the group to delay a critical meeting amid faltering prices, according to delegates. The Saudi-led alliance hasn’t been able to reach an agreement with Angola and Nigeria, which are pushing back against lower quota limits for 2024 that reflect their diminished production capabilities, delegates said, asking not to be named because the information was private.

Aerial Observations of Symmetric Instability at the North Wall of the Gulf Stream
An unusual spatial pattern on the ocean surface was captured by thermal airborne swaths taken across a strong sea surface temperature front at the North Wall of the Gulf Stream. The thermal pattern on the cold side of the front resembles a staircase consisting of tens of steps, each up to ?200 m wide and up to ?0.3?C warm. The steps are well organized, clearly separated by sharp temperature gradients, mostly parallel and aligned with the primary front.
