Gare Joyce’s Biography

I joined the staff of the Kingston Whig-Standard/Postmedia in March of 2025.

For nine years I was a feature writer on staff with ESPN The Magazine and espn.com. Later I served as a feature editor and writer for Sportsnet. Back in the 90s I was a columnist and feature writer with the Globe and Mail.

My bylines have appeared in The New York Times (including essays for the op-ed pages), the Athletic, Men's Health, Reader's Digest, the Irish Independent and the Christian Science Monitor among others. My stories were listed in the Best American Sports Writing series nine times and I won four Canadian National Magazine Awards.

I have written ten non-fiction books: The first, The Only Ticket off the Island, looked at baseball in the Dominican Republic circa 1991; the latest, Most Valuable, detailed Sidney Crosby's influence on a generation of NHL players.

I've written a few novels and the first, The Code, was adapted for the TV series Private Eyes with Jason Priestley which ran for six seasons and was broadcast in more than 100 nations in pretty much every time zone.

My short story, John Brisker's Greatest Game, was selected by Dave Eggers for the line-up of ESPN The Magazine's fiction issue, making me the only sportswriter in a cast of New Yorker regulars.

I've written about a variety of subjects away from sports, including the work of a missionary in Albania, a profile of the Oscar-winning screenwriter Budd Schulberg, a festival for amateur geologists, a psychiatrist who works with pedophiles and the production of Buster Keaton's last silent film as described by the then-93-year-old director.

Audible commissioned and produced my memoir, How to Succeed in Sportswriting (without Really Trying) in the fall of 2022. Excerpts from the Audible Original and other personal essays can be found on my SubStack page, https://garejoyce2022.substack.com, also titled How to Succeed in Sportswriting (without Really Trying).
