Thanks to Covid-19, home growers of cannabis have taken over a share of the market from drug dealers
Back in the days when “skunk” was mainly associated with cartoon character Pepé Le Pew and hydroponics was a way of improving cucumbers, most of the United Kingdom’s cannabis supply was imported from places such as Morocco and Lebanon. This changed in the past two or three decades in the UK and many other countries as organised criminal gangs set up growing operations closer to home.
Growing cannabis at home: how COVID-19 has fuelled a boom around the world

Save the Elephant: What we can Learn from Failures of the War on Drugs
Save the Elephant: What we can Learn from Failures of the War on Drugs Elephant populations in Africa have declined by 30% in just seven years, mainly thanks to poaching. If the trend continues, half the continent’s remaining elephants are predicted to disappear within the next decade. The slaughter of so many huge animals, risking extinction, is rightly considered an ecological problem.
Conservation enforcement: Insights from people incarcerated for wildlife crimes in Nepal
ABSTRACT There are long‐standing debates about the effectiveness and social impacts of enforcement‐based conservation, particularly as investments into enforcement increase in response to growing alarm about Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT). However, there is little data on the people subject to this enforcement, including prison sentences, species targeted, what motivates and deters them, and the social impacts of enforcement.
Decriminalise use of medical marijuana and legalise small-scale cultivation
A large number of people in Britain are committing crime to alleviate pain and suffering. They do this by growing cannabis for medicinal use. But cannabis cultivation is a criminal offence that can carry a substantial prison sentence, even in these circumstances. Some sick people grow cannabis for themselves, but often growers provide cannabis for others – which means committing the more serious offence of drug supply.
Save the elephant: what we can learn from failures of the war on drugs

If the trend continues, half the continent’s remaining elephants are predicted to disappear within the next decade. The slaughter of so many huge animals, risking extinction, is rightly considered an ecological problem. But poaching and the illegal wildlife trade are also crimes and, as such, we can turn to criminology for possible solutions.
Newspaper story sparked church rescue
I would like to thank the Standard-Speaker and Jill Whalen for the stories which were done about our church, Christ Reformed United Church of Christ in McAdoo. We had set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise $10,000. This was seen by Jill Whalen who did the original story, which was then seen by WNEP-TV and WYLN-TV, and they each did stories regarding our church and our financial issues.
Book review: Dawn Paley, Drug War Capitalism
Dawn Paley’s Drug War Capitalism is a compelling and authoritative description of the realities of the war on drugs waged by the United States and its devastating outcomes in Latin America. Paley is a Canadian journalist who deftly combines the greatest strengths of journalism with the most useful tools of scholarly research. Paley traveled through Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, conducting extensive interviews and analyzing secondary data sources.
