Outsider Art & Quirky Collections: Talking with Terry Lee Maker
I first fell in love with Terry Lee Maker’s artwork after seeing her massive Cowgirl Hat Ball, a giant sphere made from 500 cowboy hats that was shown at the Longmont Museum of Art in Colorado. Maker was born and raised in Abilene, Texas, to parents who built, from the ground up, three mom-and-pop motels in the 1950s.
Revolution Or Risk? The Rise Of Artificial Intelligence In (Bespoke) Fashion
By now, you will all have heard about ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot that took the world by storm, and immediately terrified most of the globe into believing robots would steal their jobs. It's been the talk of the town for months. But this type of generative AI is only one example of the revolutionary technology we've seen emerge in recent years, and it's not only content that's affected by the new tech.

Patrons take their love for San Antonio art and artists to Cuba
Martinez said her two previous visits—including talking with many artists there—had her concluding that art holds a higher station there. “I do believe the Cuban culture might value arts more than we do. When I go there, art is everywhere. The artists are gratified. I believe that they’re making a living with their art.” Martinez said while researching the project, she came across another reason to make the art interchange.

MitoNEET prevents iron overload‐induced insulin resistance in H9c2 cells through regulation of mitochondrial iron
Abstract Iron overload (IO) induces insulin resistance in H9c2 cardiomyoblast cells. Here, we used H9c2 cells overexpressing MitoNEET to examine the potential for protection against iron accumulation in the mitochondria and subsequent insulin resistance. In control H9c2 cells, IO was observed to increase mitochondrial iron content, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, mitochondrial fission, and reduced insulin-stimulated Akt and ERK1/2 phosphorylation.

An Interview With James Cobb and James W. Johnson
GS: If you could have any piece of artwork, and money wasn’t a factor, what would it be? JC: Yeah, that one’s basically impossible for me. I don’t have much of a possession impulse. I do own and live with plenty of art that I love, mostly through decades of trades with contemporaries, but I truly can’t imagine a Cy Twombly, an Anselm Kiefer, a Joan Mitchell, a Bacon, Stella, or an Egon Schiele landscape — all work that I greatly admire. Impossible. Maybe a very tiny one?
Julia Buccola Petta: The Eternal Italian Bride of Chicago’s Mt. Carmel Cemetery
Julia Buccola Petta would have been another ordinary woman, were it not for the odd circumstances in the years following her death. Born on June 6, 1891 to George Buccola and Filomena Spitalera, Julia immigrated to the United States with her mother in 1913 after George passed away. Upon arrival, mother and daughter traveled to the Chicago area, where they joined the three Buccola children already living in United States: Henry, Joseph, and Rosalia.

Q: I’m a fair complexioned mid-30s male perplexed about colours I should wear. I’d love to move out of my comfort zone and revamp my wardrobe. An Interview with Larry Graeber
Larry Graeber at Blue Star in San Antonio, 2019 Larry Graeber is one of San Antonio’s senior, under-the-radar artists. He has created decades of bold and original sculptures and paintings with an instantly recognizable style, but (my opinion) his quiet, unassuming demeanor has kept him from getting the local recognition he deserves. Larry is the only artist to ever turn down my request for an interview, but thankfully, I’m not above pleading and begging.

Eastern State Hospital: America’s First Insane Asylum
On October 12, 1773, the first insane asylum in the United States opened its doors. Located in Williamsburg, Virginia, the “Publick Hospital” had been chartered three years prior, using land bequeathed by the House of Burgesses, Virginia’s legislative assembly. By its own admission, the hospital was established “for the support and maintenance of Ideots, Lunaticks, and Other Persons of Unsound Minds” who threatened society. Realistically, there was little support for these unfortunates.
Build a seasonal wardrobe on a Dh6,000 budget
Q: I’m in my 30s and have a wedding and a few events coming up. How can I best plan my wardrobe? I have a budget of around Dh6,000 for some new threads. The great thing about this time of year in the UAE is that the weather is getting cooler, affording you greater flexibility when it comes to your sartorial choices. Now, while a lot of what I may say can ultimately come down to personal taste, I will suggest a few key pieces for the coming season that will carry you through these events in style.
How to wear linen shirts to work
As it is very hot here at the moment and I’m rather uncomfortable wearing my regular suits, can you advise the best way for me to wear my linen shirts and still look professional? Linen being a breathable fabric is a great choice for the UAE summer heat, and creating an outfit with it that looks smart and stylish is easy to do, as long as you follow a couple of rules.
Grumblethorpe: Philadelphia’s Seriously Haunted Historic Home
Standing at 5267 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia is a nondescript building with an otherworldly reputation. In a city with so many historic landmarks, the oddly-named Grumblethorpe (said to come from a novel about a German family in England) looks like nothing more than another stone colonial structure. But tales of its spectral happenings go back over two and half centuries and continue to this day.
Style tips if you have a triangular body shape
I recently read about body shapes and it seems I fall into the triangle body shape. Do you have any advice for me on how and what I should wear in terms of clothing? Let me start by introducing the triangle shape, but making it clear that this does not necessarily mean fat. Many of us are simply predisposed to being larger around the waist and hips and relatively narrow up top.
Mystery Hill: America's Stonehenge
In the town of Salem, New Hampshire, stand an odd arrangement of rocks and boulders shrouded in mystery. Occupying about 30 acres of land, the history of this enigmatic place is debated by archeologists and conspiracy theorists alike. Some have offered more contemporary and logical explanations, while others are certain that Phoenicians, Vikings, or Celts are responsible for the site. It was once known as Mystery Hill. Nowadays, it is known as America's Stonehenge.
Into the Storm: The Vanishing of Ambrose Small
Theatre impresario Ambrose J. Small wasn't a very popular man in his community. Despite his extremely successful career, he managed to repulse several people in his pursuit of debauchery. He had several mistresses, and would often spend most of his time gambling away large sums of money. When he disappeared in a howling snowstorm on December 2, 1919, the public was more befuddled than concerned. Many claimed to have spotted him in various locations all over the globe, but he was never found.
The Decades-Long Mystery of the Bear Brook Murders
UPDATE JUNE 6, 2019: Authorities in New Hampshire have identified three of the four victims in the Bear Brook murders case. See below for details. Fifteen years apart, in 1985 and 2000, four bodies were found in New Hampshire’s 10,000-acre Bear Brook State Park. The first two bodies, a woman and a young girl, were found by hunters on November 10, 1985. Both had been dismembered, wrapped in a plastic bag, and stuffed into a 55-gallon drum behind Bear Brook Gardens Mobile Home Park.
A Journey of Death: What Happened to Ambrose Bierce?
Writer and critic Ambrose Bierce was an enigmatic man. On the surface, he was highly educated and had an incredible command of the English language. He was a master storyteller; his short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” has since been adapted time and time again for both film and TV. Bierce was also a bit morbid, and by most accounts, obsessed with the concept of death. When he vanished in 1914, never to be seen again, it made his life and legacy all the more mysterious.
A Haunting at the Story Inn: The Tale of the Blue Lady
If you were to drive along South State Road in Nashville, Indiana, and pass the Story Inn, you probably wouldn’t give it a second look. With its rustic appearance, the small building looks like an antiques shop. But there is a special room at the Story Inn. Just above the general store, it has three windows, a private deck overlooking a garden, a queen-sized bed, and a large bathroom with a clawfoot tub. It’s also haunted by a specter known as the Blue Lady.
Artist on Artist: Gary Sweeney Interviews Ana Fernandez
February 26, 2019 Arts » ArtSlut click to enlarge Ana Fernandez My first encounter with Corpus Christi native and Joan Mitchell Foundation grant winner Ana Fernandez had nothing to do with art. She had rescued a severely injured stray dog and she spent a great deal of time and money nursing “Pebbles” back to health, so I wanted to meet her. Since then, I’ve noticed her artwork in exhibitions all over Southtown, and her paintings get better every time I see them.

Artist on Artist: Gary Sweeney Interviews Chad Dawkins
It’s amazing how many of San Antonio’s most talented artists began their careers in the Texas panhandle: Ken Little, Hills Snyder, Diana Kersey, Jeremiah Teutsch, Cakky Brawley, Sarah Roberts and Greg Johnson are just some of the transplants who add to our thriving local art scene.
Dolce & Gabbana’s AW18 collection: serious fashion with a sense of humour
They open with gold-brocaded tailcoats, an overwrought exploration of civilian military regalia. Chubby cherubs frolic cheerfully up and down a black silk suit, on the chest of a hoodie, on a baby blue oversized satin T-shirt set against gold trousers. Red finds outlet in a bright, slim-cut two-piece with a crown motif — the royal undertones accentuated by a purple satin bow tie. Elsewhere a deep purple dinner jacket — in velvet, of course — is adorned with an elaborate lapel.
The blazer that redefined men’s beachwear
The Uribe brothers have turned the beach into a catwalk. Of sorts. It’s still very hot and sandy. But now there’s a dapper element that was perhaps missing before. As the name of the brand suggests, the date of September 20th is a significant one for the Uribe brothers. “The 20th of September is a very special date for me personally,” Federico Uribe, co-founder and creative director of the brand says.
How to power dress
Match your leathers. There is something that speaks of a military efficiency in belts and shoes that match. Remember, this is power dressing for situations where you want to look like everything is under your command. The assumption people will make about your character when they see your wardrobe has been meticulously planned and pulled together will be the same assumption they make about your professional demeanour.
Want to Dress Like Anthony Joshua?
Prior to the bout, the Watford-born boxer has found time to shadow box, spar and characteristically smile his way through some Hugo shoots is some of the fashion house’s AW18 collection of suits, shirts and jackets which flex with the movements of the body, as perfectly demonstrated by AJ’s studio time. The campaign film and images show Joshua in constant motion, dressed in both minimal boxing attire and an impeccable stretch tailoring suit.
Zegna reimagines the suit
Structured items sit comfortably alongside more flowy pieces, and even on the more tailored garments the craftsmanship is delicate. There’s a focus on oversized fit — a deliberate measure given that Sartori created these outfits for the models after they’d been cast, meeting the requirements for the Couture label. Jeans are reinterpreted and feature the very en vogue throwback elasticated ankles.
Artist on Artist: Gary Sweeney Interviews Mari Hernandez
Mari Hernandez is a multidisciplinary artist whose recent Southwest School of Art photography installation “What Remains” was a knockout exploration of identity and construction of the self. A San Antonio native, Hernandez received a BA in English Literature from UTSA, but began to use art as a means of exploring her Chicana aesthetic. She and several women artists founded the art collective Más Rudas, which challenged the lack of representation of women of color in the local art community.
The Misery of Forest Haven Asylum
When Forest Haven Asylum opened in 1925, it was exactly that–a haven and refuge for those in need, surrounded by a lush forest. The asylum was open for mentally impaired individuals of any age, as part of an effort to ease the burden of supporting a disabled person. It was believed that if families surrendered their in-need relatives, they would flourish in an environment that was made to complement their specific, and often intensive, personal needs.
Held Prisoner by Her Mom for 25 Years
She wanted to marry a man her mother didn’t approve of. Her punishment was unspeakable. Twenty-five years later Blanche Monnier was found, starved and filthy, locked in a small room in her mother’s house in Poitiers, France. The year was 1901. She hadn’t seen sunlight for a quarter-century. Blanche was finally saved by an anonymous letter sent to the police. The letter read: Monsieur Attorney General: I have the honor to inform you of an exceptionally serious occurrence.
The Chilling, Unsolved Murder of the Grimes Sisters

On December 17, 1956 they headed to Chicago’s Brighton Theater see it again. Barbara was 15; Patricia was 13. They left the house at 7:30 p.m. Their mother Loretta Grimes expected the girls might stay for the double feature. But when midnight arrived and her girls hadn’t come home, she got worried.
