‘Outstanding’ ESE-led research team pioneering a new form of brain imaging receives Imperial President’s Award

A research team in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering (ESE) at Imperial College London – that is adapting geophysics techniques to the practice of improved medical imaging – has received a prestigious internal award for excellence in research. The innovations, contributions and impact of the Transmission and Reflection UltraSound Tomography (TRUST) team were recognised with the annual Imperial President’s Medal for Outstanding Research Team last year.

Research casts doubt on claims of present-day volcanism on Venus

New analysis co-led by Imperial College London suggests that recent evidence for active lava flows on Earth’s ‘sister planet’ may be explained by radar viewing angles rather than eruptions. Our new work should serve as a very useful warning that a full geologic analysis and elimination of other possibilities should always be conducted before drawing any firm conclusions about volcanism on other planets.

‘Fossils’ of lightning could help decode ancient processes and planetary environments

Tiny glassy particles discovered on a remote rock platform in Western Australia have been identified as the signature of lightning strikes, opening new possibilities for understanding Earth’s deep past and the potential for life on other planets. Research led by Imperial College London found that these microscopic spheres, called spherules, form when lightning heats rock to thousands of degrees, spraying molten droplets that cool rapidly in mid-air.
