For decades, astronomers have faced an invisible obstacle: the glow of Earth’s own atmosphere. Scientists trying to observe faint, distant celestial objects in infrared light are hampered by brightness in the sky itself—not just from city lights, but from a chemical reaction happening miles above Earth’s surface. When sunlight breaks ozone apart in the upper atmosphere in the presence of water, hydroxyl, or OH, molecules are produced and emit a dense barrage of light.

Inspired by Brain’s Hidden Half, UMD-led Project Aims for Smarter AI

The researchers are pursuing what Losert calls “hybrid AI,” a new approach to machine learning that combines principles of biological computation with traditional computing. The teams will study astrocytes’ role in how the brain thinks—and determine whether integrating these biomechanisms with traditional computing hardware can produce AI that learns faster, adapts more reliably and stays resilient as real-world conditions around it change.

8 Undergraduates Receive 2026 NOAA Hollings Scholarships

Eight rising juniors at the University of Maryland have been awarded Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), one of the premier honors for undergraduates in the field. The students will each receive $19,000 of academic assistance and a paid summer internship with NOAA next year. The UMD cohort—the largest in the nation this year and second-highest ever at UMD—brings Maryland’s total number of Hollings Scholars since 2008 to 56.
