Dissertation of Distinction (PhD)

2017 - Academic

I graduated with my PhD in cognitive psychology in August 2017. My PhD dissertation won the coveted 'dissertation of distinction award." My dissertation was chaired by Harvard Medical School professor Ruth Richards, MD, PHD. The school that awarded me the degree, Saybrook University, is a progress graduate school for working professionals, and draws its professors from some of the best schools in the US.

Computer Press Award: Best Radio Show (1M and over)

1994 - Radio show hosting and production

The Computer Press Association awarded my syndicated three-hour live tech call in show, On Computers with Gina Smith, first prize for Best Radio Show. I originally hosted this show with Leo Laporte, who went on to found TWiT. On Computers reached two million listeners in the US and internationally over the Armed Forces Radio Network every Sunday for a decade. The next year, I left to start a new radio show, Connected with Gina Smith, on the ABC Radio Network.

American Society of Newspaper Editors Award

1986 - investigative journalism

Won this award with another reporter, the Pulitzer prize winner Mike Sallah, while I was still in college. The piece was a map of all crack houses in a Southern Florida urban neighborhood, with arrest details, owners, everything listed. It won first place in the investigative reporting category, newspapers 150,000 circulation and under. (The piece ran in the Boca Raton News and the News of Delray Beach)

Florida State University Honored Alumnus (lifetime achievement)

1998 - achievements in journalism

FSU gives this award out to one alumnus annually. I was the youngest alum in the 75 year history of the award to win this -- and the only woman under 35 to receive it.
