When it comes to AI data centers, public policy is not keeping up with public opinion. In recent years, state and local governments across America have raced to install dozens of generous tax breaks, aimed at enticing data center construction projects. But the latest opinion poll from Gallup shows 7 out of 10 Americans do not want the massive computing hubs built in their communities. Now, policy makers are deciding whether to stand by the lucrative data center tax deals, or to repeal them.

Clyde Vanel, a New York Assembly Member from Queens (D–Cambria Heights), could hardly believe his eyes when he watched a series of online videos depicting robots mounted with weapons. “This is crazy. This has to be against the law,” he said. “And then I looked in our state, and I saw that it is not!” Vanel said the videos prompted him to introduce legislation in the New York Assembly, that would outlaw people from weaponizing robots.

The world’s most powerful artificial intelligence luminaries have repeatedly warned AI is in urgent need of government regulation to protect against misuse of the technology, psychological impacts and potential economic disruption. “These risks are serious,” Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, told lawmakers in 2023. “Of course, there need to be guardrails,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, testifying before a Senate Committee last year.
