Wildfires in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and the Northwest Territories have burned more than 3.9 million hectares this summer, prompted widespread evacuation orders, and created poor air quality for not only Canadians, but more than 120 million people across the midwestern and northeastern United States. The fires spread exceptionally quickly, stressing the resources of local response agencies. About 700 fires are still active across Canada.

Just one musician has ever played a version of “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” on a larger-than-life spiderweb or covered Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight” on the Optron, an electric guitar–lightsaber mashup that visualizes music with multicolored lights. Chet Udell, a professor, musician, engineer, and designer at Oregon State University (OSU), is that musician. The Optron and SpiderHarp are just two of the inventive instruments—musical and otherwise—he’s created over his career.
