HARPSWELL, Maine — A lobsterman from Harpswell had a rare encounter this week when he came across a group of great white sharks while hauling traps near Cundy’s Harbor. Cory Hawkes, who has fished the local waters his whole life, said he was moving from offshore to inshore just north of Ragged Island when he noticed something unusual in the water. "Anytime I see a fin or something like that—sunfish, whales, blue sharks, tuna, porpoises—I always stop to admire them," Hawkes said.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — A rare encounter in the Maine woods led to a wildlife rescue effort that gave a vulnerable moose calf its only shot at survival. Shawn Perley, a logging supervisor with nearly two decades of field experience, was out with crews opening old logging roads in Township TAR 2—between Glenwood and Silver Ridge—when he noticed a cow moose behaving strangely. “The head was cocked off to the side, she was walking in circles,” Perley said.

JACKMAN, Maine — As anyone who’s ever had a beagle – or hunted with one – knows, once they get on a scent it can be very hard to pull them off it. “Everybody has that story. For sure. And I know some stories that have turned out really bad," Bill Gilboe said. "And I’m really glad, and very appreciative, to anyone that had anything to do with getting him home.” Gilboe is the owner of the Jackman Motel. He also owns 13 beagles, and five of them joined him for a New Year’s Day rabbit hunt.
