Why ‘mob grazing’ may help protect drought-hit Senegal’s vast grasslands
Ibrahima Ka, dressed in flowing indigo robes, gathers his herd with those of his neighbours before a stretch of lush, untouched pasture. The bellowing, heaving and trampling of 350 impatient zebu cows behind a wire perimeter marks a break with centuries of herding tradition in Senegal, west Africa. Rather than roaming freely across the country’s vast grasslands, shepherds tightly pack the herd together, confining them to graze in short, intensive bursts before being moved to a new plot.

Climate change-worsened floods wreak havoc in Africa
Every rainy season for the past 12 years, floods have swept through 67-year-old Idris Egbunu's house in central Nigeria. It is always the same story -- the Niger River bursts its banks and the waters claim his home for weeks on end, until he can return and take stock of the damage. The house then needs cleaning, repairs, fumigation and repainting, until the next rainy season.

Senegal talks rule out presidential vote before Sall's term expires
Political crisis talks called by Senegal's President Macky Sall on Tuesday reached a "broad consensus" that the presidential vote he postponed could not be held before his mandate ends on April 2, multiple participants told AFP. Sall's two-day "national dialogue" aimed at setting a date for the delayed election also advocated the head of state remain in office beyond the end of his term and until his successor is installed.
Senegal president pursues talks for new election date
Crisis talks called by Senegal's President Macky Sall entered their second day Tuesday aimed at setting a date for a presidential election he postponed, while civil society tried to mobilise support for a vote in the next few weeks. Senegal is grappling with its worst political crisis in decades after Sall's last-minute deferral of the February 25 election.

Senegal's newly freed opponents ready to resume the fight
After more than six months behind bars, 34-year-old Mohamed Sy has just been granted his freedom -- one of hundreds of detained opposition members and activists suddenly released after weeks of political upheaval in Senegal. Much to his surprise, Sy's friends, family and neighbours have welcomed him home as a hero. "People congratulate me or offer me money, whereas usually when you get out of prison you're stigmatised, it's crazy," said the electrician, who was detained in the capital Dakar.
Senegal plunges further into unknown after vote delay overturned
Senegal plunged further into the unknown on Friday after the top constitutional body overturned President Macky Sall's contentious decision to postpone this month's presidential election. It is yet to be seen how and when the vote will now take place, with Sall so far offering no comment on the historic ruling by the Constitutional Council. His staff told the media they had "taken note" of the decision, without questioning the verdict, which cannot be appealed.

Young Senegalese want to vote no matter what
Street vendor Mohamed Al Amine Toure, 23, is devastated over the delay of Senegal's presidential election. He had been all geared up to go out and vote. He and his friends busy themselves around a makeshift second-hand clothes stall on the main road of the popular Colobane market in the capital Dakar. But, said Toure, he has carefully put his polling card away -- for now. "February 25 was an important day for us," Toure told AFP.
