Facing Our Fears: Matthew 8
In Matthew 8 it speaks of Jesus’ disciples caught in a storm in the Sea of Galilee; where the disciples faced the full force of nature’s wrath. For these veteran fishermen to express their fear and plea for help to a carpenter indicates that they know he can do what they cannot do for themselves. But what do they think he will do? After all, when he calms the storm, they ask “What kind of man is this?” (8:27).
“What To Do in A Storm?”
The sea has always been a symbol of wild, untamable power. You only have to stand beside it, even on a calm day, to sense its power. There is so much of it, when the tide comes in, imagine how many gallons of water have moved down the coast line; and it’s doing that all the time, day and night. Then stand beside it when the wind gets up, and watch how all those millions of gallons leap and dance about. Moving anything that gets in its path that is not tied down firmly.
The Spiritual Seed that is Planted
“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:6 Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:6, a seed must be planted first in order for us to grow spiritually. We often overlook this first step in our spiritual life. In church each Sunday, as the worship service is about to end, I remind the church to tell someone what Jesus Christ has done in their lives. In other words, I remind them to tell their spiritual testimony.
Compassion Over Pride
Luke 15:20 – So, he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. The parable of the lost son describes the passion of a caring father for his runaway son. Day after day, the father had been scanning the horizons for any sign of his lost son.
MoD’s Financial Recognition Scheme
As Chair of Fighting With Pride, the LGBTQ+ military charity, I spend much of my time talking to veterans who were dismissed from the Armed Forces because of who they were, not what they did. Many are now elderly. Some are in poor health. All were promised, by government, that the injustice they suffered would finally be addressed. That promise matters. And how it is delivered matters just as much.
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is the day when we pause to reflect, remember, and respect the abundant blessings that God has bestowed upon us. Millions will use this special day, which has been appointed as Thanksgiving Day, as a day of indulgence, and ingratitude, not respecting their creator, conscience, or country. In other words, we have over looked the true meaning of this day.
Case Study: Port of Bandon Marina
Reading Time: 3 minutes Bandon, Oregon West Coast Contractors, Lee Composites, Bellingham Marine The town of Bandon, Oregon was founded in the mid-1800s at the mouth of the Coquille River on a scenic part of the state’s southwest coast. By the time the U.S Army Corps of Engineers built a jetty at the Port of Bandon in 1884, the town was a center for the export of salmon, cranberries and salmon.
The Wrong Judgment, Matthew 26:65-66 (NLT)
People can be wrong in their judgments. In the early 1960s, I recall as a young athlete when integration was taking place in the Eastern Panhandle. I had entered Harpers Ferry High School as a freshman. I went out for the football team and started a few games. That year was amazing, we went undefeated. It was now my sophomore year, and most of the players on the undefeated team had graduated. We were in a rebuilding year, and I decided to go out for the quarterback position.
Retelling of the Prodigal Son’s Story Luke 15:11-32
We seek to stay in a place that makes us feel comfortable. We often look at other people's culture through our lens and not theirs. In retelling the Prodigal Son’s story, I will attempt to provide Middle Eastern insights into the understanding of this story. Let us start first with the characters of the story: the father, the elder son, and the younger (Prodigal) son. In a Middle Eastern culture, the younger son never speaks first and is considered out of place.
Being Young Again
The aging process is something that is fought against in today’s life style. From dieting, exercising, face lifts, tummy tucks, dying your hair, and many more; it is a constant exercise in fertility that cannot be won. Aging is inevitable! You cannot go back to being young again. We often ask ourselves the question if you had to do it all over again, what would be your response? Would you truly want to go back to those youthful or good old days? The “good old days” are an illusion.
“Why Me Lord?”
This is the question that many people ask when things go wrong. Take for example, the many families that have suffered in the California wildfires or the families of the New Orleans domestic attack. Maybe you are one of those who have received bad news from the doctor. Maybe there are bad things happening in your life. And you ask “why me Lord?” Are you one of the many that get discouraged, I am sure that you do. There are times when all of us have problems and become discouraged.

The boat was traveling in excess of the 35 mph speed limit set on the lake.
What does it mean to be a Christian?
There is an old spiritual that expresses the desire of every believer: Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart. Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart. The truth is that everybody, who gives themselves the title of a Christian does not fit the claim. The title Christian is a fallen term. This term Christian has been stretched to the extent that it covers modern reason of religious truth on one hand and something light in substance with feeling, but no reason.

“The Cross"
March the 29th of this year will be the ninetieth year, that I have made my way down the streets of Martinsburg, participating in the Annual Good Friday Cross Walk. For some the cross has no meaning. For some the cross is nothing but a necklace to be worn around one’s neck as a piece of jewelry on display. What does the cross mean to you? If you are a Christian it represents the suffering of Christ on the cross.

"The Heart of Christianity"
There is a story about a thirteenth-century monk named Brother Juniper. The story goes that Brother Juniper had so much pity and compassion for the poor that when he saw anyone who was badly clothed he would immediately rip off a piece of his own clothing and give it to him. This was Brother Juniper’s routine.

Are you dealing with sin inwardly and yet you’re going through your daily routine convincing others everything is fine? You know you can’t keep this up because it’s eating away at you. The thing that is eating away at you is called your conscience – a person’s inner awareness of conforming to the will of God or departing from it, resulting in either a sense of approval or condemnation. In Mark 6:14-29 and Luke 23:6-12, we find the story of King Herod, a man who died from the inside out.

“We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof” (Psalm 137:2). Grief comes in many forms. Sometimes it can cause you to withdraw from life. I am reminded of a person who was very active in the church. They participated diligently as a servant of God. A person who was an usher. A person who sang in the choir. A person who served on various church committees. A person who attended church regularly! Then the person’s loyalty to God and the church ceased.

Luke 10:25-37 In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus tells a story of a Jewish man who was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho. He was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and left him half dead beside the road. A Jewish priest came along, but when he saw the man lying there he crossed to the other side of the road. A Jewish temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also crossed to the other side.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NLT) My wife and I will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary on June 14. We were a couple for another ten years before we said, “I do.” As the years go by and we are blessed to see another year, we ask each other where have the years gone? The point is not where the years have gone, but as the years go by you realize the closer a man and his wife get to Christ, the clearer they see how important it is for them to stay close to each other.

17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 We see all around us suffering both of individuals and of entire nations. Some people are crushed by the hard mark of these events. They have suffered great losses or have endured illness that is almost more than one can bear.

A few days ago, I was clicking through the channels with the TV remote. I stopped for a second to view a few scenes of the movie called “Little Women.” As I watched, I heard one of the characters say something that caught my attention. He said, “Morals don’t sell these days and times.” I thought about that statement and how true it is in our society today. We have gotten away from some of the things that teach us about morals. There is no better teacher than God’s word.

In life the question of why comes before us many times, as we face obstacles that are beyond our control. We often look to God for the answer by saying these words, “why is this happening to such a good person?” Why does God let people suffer? The questions could go on and on. And sometimes we do not get the answer that we want to hear. I am reminded of a short poem I came across in my reading.

Over the years of traveling Route 9 to Martinsburg to the church and then back home to Harpers Ferry, I have witnessed many sights. But one of the things I have noticed so often is the bumper stickers that are on display as I follow behind the vehicles. They may be political, religious, a celebration of a life or even sexual in content. They come in all forms, shapes, and sizes. But I want to comment on the ones that have religious content.

Most of us have witnessed a marriage ceremony. The groomsmen faithfully stand at attention. The bride begins her long walk down the aisle, arm in arm with her father. The smiling, but nervous, husband-to-be follows every step of his bride with eyes full of love. Then happy tears are shed, vows are exchanged and family’s merge. A wedding is a joyous celebration of love. It is the holy mystery of two becoming one, of beginning life together, and of commitment.
Local View: Support for parks vital for Duluth's quality of life
A “yes” vote for the parks referendum on Nov. 8 is critical to the continued restoration and maintenance of our city’s parks, trails, community centers, and open spaces. We, as former presidents of the Duluth Parks Commission, respectfully request your “yes” vote. Unfortunately, until 2011, the city’s parks system operated for many years with a declining budget. Inadequate funding affected the maintenance of our parks and facilities throughout the city.

It is well-documented that there is a rising mental health crisis among young people. The extent of this issue was underlined by a 2021 survey by NHS Providers, in which 100 per cent of mental health trust leaders said that the demand their trusts were experiencing for children and young people (CYP) services had increased in the previous six months - with 80 per cent saying the increase had been “significant”.
