1 Introduction Cycloarenes are macrocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons composed of fully fused benzene rings and featuring inward-pointing C–H bonds [1-3]. The first and most iconic member of this class is kekulene, synthesized by Staab and Diederich in 1978 [4]. Early studies showed that π-electron delocalization [5] in these systems follows Clar's aromatic sextet model [6], as evidenced by deshielded inner protons in 1H NMR spectra, rather than global annulene-type aromaticity [7].
