China can build AI, but it can’t install trust
When DeepSeek’s R1 model arrived in January 2025, it was greeted as China’s leap to the artificial intelligence (AI) frontier. While R1 outperformed its Western competitors in maths and coding, it also refused or deflected roughly 85 per cent of prompts concerning politically sensitive topics in China. This distinction lies at the heart of China’s bid to shape the global technological order.

A Case Study of Veteran Patient‐Researcher Partnerships in Mental Health Research and Practice: Three Recommendations From a Veteran Patient Engaged in Research (VPER)
1 Introduction Veterans possess a variety of valuable perspectives and lived experiences. These qualities bring depth and richness to the research world [1]. Traditionally, persons engaged in research in this context would be labelled ‘stakeholders’. Instead, we refer to them as Veteran patients engaged in research (VPERs), per the guidance of the Health Equity Style Guide released in 2020 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [2].
The Influence of Drosophila Spire and Myosin V During Mid‐Oogenesis Is Independent of Their Direct Interaction
1 Introduction The cytoskeleton plays critical roles at essentially every step of oogenesis. A great amount of our knowledge comes from work in the classical model organism, Drosophila melanogaster (Hudson and Cooley 2002; Robinson and Cooley 1997; Rodal et al. 2015).

AI 'Trustwashing' Changes How Consumers Judge Credibility
This perspective is part of a series of provocations published on Tech Policy Press in advance of a symposium at the University of Pittsburgh's Communication Technology Research Lab (CTRL) on threats to knowledge and US democracy. Generative AI is changing how people decide what to believe. Large language models can produce fluent, confident answers across a wide range of topics at the drop of a hat, and many readers take that fluency as a proxy for truth.

Meet the women tossing aside stereotypes at Highland Games
The roar from the crowd at the Glenurquhart Highland Games near Loch Ness last month was not just appreciation for a good throw, it was recognition that women had finally claimed their place in the “heavies”. For the first time, Scottish soil hosted the World Female Heavy Events Championship, bringing the spotlight to the most demanding and traditionally male events in Highland Games competition.

Localization of Drosophila formin, Cappuccino, influences posterior oocyte organization
Abstract Cappuccino (Capu) and Spire build actin networks in numerous systems, including the mouse oocyte, melanocytes, and the Drosophila oocyte. As observed in mammalian systems, the localization of the Capu homologues (FMN1/2), influences the function of the actin network. Therefore, we established and interrogated the impact of altering localization of Capu in the Drosophila oocyte to better understand its role and that of the actin mesh it builds.

Interesting Things I Learned During the Most Unexpected Year of my Life
Interesting Things I Learned During the Most Unexpected Year of my Life Hey, what’s up, it’s been a while. Specifically, it has been a year since my last post on Medium. The main reason for this is that I have been chock-a-block (is this a Britishism or does everyone use this phrase?) busy, so finding the time has been really hard. A lot has changed in the last year — a lot of really unexpected things. A year ago, I would not have a dreamed that I would be where I am now.
HIV/Tuberculosis Coinfection in Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period
1. Introduction Globally, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and tuberculosis (TB) pose significant public health challenges [1,2,3]. TB is the primary factor contributing to mortality in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) [4]. The coexistence of HIV and TB forms a formidable partnership, mutually accelerating the advancement of each other’s detrimental effects [4].

THE MOST IMPORTANT ANIMAL OF ALL
by Penny Worms ; illustrated by Hannah Bailey ‧ Which animal is most important? Seven children offer different opinions. Following a semester of zoological studies, a teacher asks their students to name the most important animal. Tan-skinned George proposes elephants (“Even their poo is useful!”), brown-skinned Nimmie goes for bees because they’re “like fairies for farmers,” and five other classmates chime in with candidates of their own: sharks, beavers, bats, tigers, and krill.

Mountain Rescue and Ski Touring Dogs In The UK
Featured image credit: Hannah Bailey They’re best friends to humans, both on and off the snow, and if you tour around the Cairngorms you may have spotted them on the hill. Zig-zagging their way up the tracks in packs, charging down the Ciste Gully or Head Wall, traversing the windy ridge or dropping down Coire Raibert, they’ll have been barking mad for Scottish snow and on the hunt for PAWder (sorry). I am, of course, talking about dogs; adventure-loving mountain dogs.
Skating Scotland: A Land For Everyone
On the side of the film, here is a short story of our journey… Like the wheels of our skateboards, we have come full circle, standing back on the soil, tarmac, heather, concrete, moss mounds and wild grass of Scotland. Born here in the 80s we chose to spread our wings and explore the world, to now finally return with new ideas, perspectives and appreciation. We returned on skateboards, having taken unexpected paths to get back here.

Inside the Fight to Save the Vjosa, the Last Wild River in Europe
“All dams are dirty”, is the stark but simple takeaway from Patagonia’s Blue Heart, the film which brought the fight for Europe’s last wild river, the Vjosa, into the public eye in 2019. Wild rivers all around Europe are fighting the constant threat of development, and a lot of that comes from hydro schemes. For the most part, the damage has already been done. No matter the debate on the cleanliness of the power, the destruction these schemes cause is clear.

The combination of spray dried plasma and reduced crude protein in diets decreases circulating cytokines of weanling pigs During the initial 2 week post-wean, dietary approaches may be implemented to alleviate effects of weaning stress on pigs. Inclusion of Spray Dried Plasma (SDP) in the diet may improve diet palatability, increase amino acid digestibility, and mitigate intestinal inflammation, resulting in improved growth performance of pigs.

Riding Monsters - Glorious Sport
When Joana first watched Garrett surf at Nazaré, she thought it was “crazy” and something she’d never want or even be able to do. “It looked like another sport entirely,” she says, “But there was also this other voice inside me which said, ‘Maybe, you should try it? So, I came home thinking, ‘Why not?’” She started to train hard physically and mentally. At first, not for Nazaré necessarily, but to be able to surf bigger waves and start being towed in.
‘We want to reshape the scene’: bringing diversity to board riding
Long the preserve of white boys, skateboarding is becoming more diverse – thanks in part to this east London crew Marie Mayassi, who describes herself as being “born in Paris but originally from Congo”, pushes along the smooth, flat ground of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. When she took up skateboarding four years ago, she noticed straight away the scene’s lack of diversity. “Representation is all: you cannot be what you cannot see,” she said. So, she resolved to be the change.

How and Why State-Backed Manipulation Is Rampant On Social Media

Looking Out To Sea, Looking Out To See, 2020
By Hannah Bailey Website whatmakesagoodphoto.com / Instagram @NeonStash Digital Growing up in Newhaven, it always felt industrial, grey and dirty to me. But staring out at the Firth of Forth over lockdown, I let nature illuminate what it had to offer. The boats stopped to allow the water to make its own patterns, the planes no longer flew over the sky so the clouds could form naturally, sunsets could create neon landscapes, and lots of people were walking around the waterfront, staring out to sea.

The Future Of Winter Sport Is Under Threat... - Whitelines Snowboarding
Culture Sustainability What can the snowboard community do about it? Words by Hannah Bailey (@neonstash) Back in 2005, I had never been snowboarding. In fact, I donât even remember knowing that it existed. I had once or twice been to Aviemore with my dad and forced onto skis at the bottom of a slope, crying my eyes out. I didnât find snowboarding until my early twenties, but it was my saviour. It didnât take long for snowboarding to become my passion, my adventure, my learning and my community.
