1 Introduction Both tropical cyclones (TCs) and extratropical cyclones (ETCs) regularly cause costly damage for coastal cities around the globe. TCs form along the tropical easterly winds, where depressions in atmospheric pressure form and thermally derive their energy from warm ocean surface water (Chan, 2005; Emanuel, 2003, 2018).

Graduate admissions committees serve as gatekeepers, deciding who has access to higher education—and to a large extent, careers—in fields spanning the humanities and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These committees have long relied on Graduate Record Exam (GRE) results as a supposedly objective measure by which to compare and rank applicants.
