The Future of Golf | By Harold Varner III
I’m not supposed to be writing articles for Golf Digest. I’m not supposed to have made my way to the PGA TOUR. I’m not supposed to be here, you know? For so many reasons, I’m just not. But the reality is, I am. It’s the culmination of luck and a heck of a lot of work ... and over the past few years, I’ve realized it’s given me a bigger purpose. It’s not about trying to win on the PGA TOUR, though that day is coming. It’s about something bigger than that. It’s about the collective WE.

The Home That Built Me | Harold Varner III Original
There are these pivotal moments in my life, my career, that I look back to all the time, like, Man, THAT really happened. There’s playing my first PGA Tour event, in 2014. There’s my first professional win, in 2016 at the Australian PGA Championship. And then there’s being in the final group on Sunday at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. That one, let me tell y’all, it’s not quite like those other memories. Bethpage beat me up, ain’t no lie there. That’s a tough place.

Matter of fact, I’ve received more messages than ever before, mostly from people who wanted me to speak up immediately because of who I am. I AM BLACK. But it’s not helpful to anyone when impulsive, passionate reaction takes precedence over clear-minded thought. Yes, I’m still angry.
So You Wanna Grow Golf?
Let’s get something out of the way: I’m black. Damn, glad I got that off my chest. I mean, you would think I didn’t know it by the amount of times I’m asked about my race. It’s actually kind of comical at this point in my career … I know exactly when the questions are coming and what’ll be asked.

The PGA Tour goes from Texas to Ohio this week for the Memorial Tournament, played at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, which is perhaps Jack Nicklaus' most famous design. The tournament was first played in 1976 and has produced a host of great champions since, including Nicklaus himself (twice), Greg Norman and Tom Watson (twice each), and Tiger Woods, who has won the event a staggering five times, the first three of which came consecutively between 1999 and 2001.

Harold Varner III: Want Bigger Drives? Copy My Moves
Out here on tour, we’re constantly put in situations where – to carry a bunker or water hazard, set up a par 5 in two, or even drive a green on a par 4 – we have to crank it up. Don’t get me wrong. I’m usually looking to make a swing with good tempo, hit the ball as straight as possible, and hope to find a little effortless power. But there are times when that’s not enough. Sometimes I have to step on the driver. That’s what you want to know about here, I’m guessing.
African American Golfer Harold Varner III: So You Wanna Grow Golf?

I mean, you would think I didn’t know it by the amount of times I’m asked about my race. It’s actually kind of comical at this point in my career … I know exactly when the questions are coming and what’ll be asked. “What’s it like being the only black guy on Tour?” “Does it feel lonely as the only African-American out there?” And my all-time favorite one:“Do you think we’re growing the game enough for African-Americans?” Well, hell no, and that’s a silly question, too.

Golf notes: It's official, Tiger Woods won't play this season
Tiger Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship, the first time he will go an entire year without playing a major. The decision, while not a surprise, also means he will go an entire PGA Tour season without playing. His agent, Mark Steinberg of Excel Sports Management, said in a text to The Associated Press on Tuesday that Woods will not play the remainder of the tour season as he continues to rehab following back surgeries.
