The gothic castle-cum-escape room you explore in Vampire Hunter: Nightrise is so delightfully kitsch that it is hard to call it truly scary. With chittering bat swarms, lycanthropes baying at the full moon, Spirit Halloween-style skeletons and revolving fireplaces, “spooky” feels like a more fitting description. It just doesn’t feel like the backdrop to a serious horror game.

2026 has been a terrific year for horror so far, across all different mediums, and video games haven’t been letting the side down. As of June, we’ve had some breakout indies, mid-budget releases that punched well above their weight, returning classics that have lost none of their luster, and exciting AAA blockbusters that more than lived up to the hype. Even better, the year still has such sights left to show us (as the iconic villain of one upcoming release would enthuse).

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Can't say that I have. Whilst it does have a retro appeal, it wouldn't suit my writing method. I'm always cutting, pasting and rearranging.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Anton Ego from Ratatouille. Unlike a lot of fictional critics, he actually shows that we can have some value.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Not quite. I don't think my school even had one come to think of it. I did serve as Culture Editor for my University's magazine though.
