Heikki Patomäki, Professor of World Politics and Global Political Economy at the University of Helsinki, is one of the leading analysts of Finland and the European Union. The Attack on Venezuela
Latin America • January 9, 2026 • The oil tanker hijackings, the US invasion of Venezuela, and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Adela Flores, violate many laws. These include the UN Charter, the law of the sea (especially UNCLOS), and the 1988 Convention on Drug Trafficking. The attack is also problematic for the US’s own political and legal system. The Trump administration acted without congressional authorisation and ignored other legal considerations.

by: Heikki Patomäki No Comments yet 11-25-2024 ~ The war in Ukraine appears to be nearing its end. It is time to start considering what the peace process could look like. Introduction Military solutions received the most attention in Europe and the US during the first two and a half years following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In late 2024, the situation has started to change. In the West and Ukraine, peace negotiations are now discussed more widely.
World Statehood: The Future Of World Politics
The planetary perspective on the future of world politics is commonly associated with life and complex ecological systems on Earth. In the two centuries since the industrial revolution, the world economy has grown by a factor of 70 or 80. This huge economic growth has shaped the Earth system and led to multiple ongoing and interconnected ecological crises.
The imperative of de-escalation in Ukraine: negotiations and possible solutions
In the West, there are two different competing narratives about the war in Ukraine. The prevailing narrative is that it is a struggle between the “bad guys” and “good guys”. For many, Russia led by dictator Putin represents imperialism and is alone responsible for this unprovoked war, whereas Ukraine represents freedom and democracy as well as courage and heroism. The forces of evil must be won decisively by military means.

For a long time thought to be an unquestioned course of things, it is now blamed for the geographical imbalances, the social injustices and environmental damage it has created.
