For countless people, social media has become a go-to source of advice on how to look, eat and exercise. On Instagram and TikTok, wellness influencers push their own strict diet and workout regimens, while peddling everything from activewear to protein powders. Invariably, they’re young, beautiful, thin and toned. Influencers such as Sommer Ray, Tammy Hembrow and Kayla Itsines have attracted tens of millions of followers by presenting highly curated versions of health, happiness and success.

‘You can be too skinny, too big, not toned enough, not curvy, all at the same time’: young women, social media and paradoxical fitness ideals

ABSTRACT In this article, we engage feminist poststructural analyses in dialogue with contemporary feminist research on young women and social media to examine how young women interpret, internalize and negotiate their fitness lifestyles in relation to rapidly changing body ideals on social media. This study draws upon an anonymous survey (203 participants) with a diverse range of young women (18–25 years) living in New Zealand and actively pursuing a fitness lifestyle.

ABSTRACT Scholars and sports organizations are increasingly focused on sportswomen’s use of social media and the risks/rewards of using digital platforms to expand financial opportunities. Simultaneously, some feminist scholars have highlighted the high levels of brand management and digital labor that sportswomen are expected to perform to build their social media following and contribute toward their sport’s longevity and economic success.
