House GOP, after pulling budget resolution, brings it back for a vote
House GOP leaders brought their budget resolution to the floor for the vote, just minutes after pulling it at the last minute Tuesday evening as they struggled to win over a handful of conservative fiscal hawks who had threatened to tank the framework for President Trump’s ambitious legislative agenda. In a stunning scene on the House floor, top Republican lawmakers decided to scrap plans to vote on the measure after lobbying holdouts in the chamber for more than an hour.

George Santos Expulsion Vote Shot Down By House GOP
On Tuesday, it appeared that George Santos’ wild stint in the House of Representatives was beginning to come to an end. Democrats introduced a motion to hold a vote on whether or not to expel the serial fabulist from the chamber. It was unlikely to succeed; expulsion requires a two-thirds supermajority. What would happen is that anyone who voted to keep the sketchy and already indicted lawmaker would be on the record. But the GOP found another way to avoid responsibility.

"Major blow" for Israel as China Brokers Iran and Saudi Arabia Peace Deal " Uncensored Publications Limited
Various countries have welcomed the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, while the regime in Tel Aviv seems to view the development as a “fatal blow” to its regional coalition building against the Islamic Republic. After several days of intensive negotiations hosted by China, Iran and Saudi Arabia finally clinched a deal on Friday to restore diplomatic relations and re-open embassies, seven years after ties were severed over several issues.
Overlapping COVID investigations by House GOP
Two House committees, and possibly more, are involved in investigating the origins of COVID — which sets up a lot of overlap, and even friction, for them. Why it matters: The findings of these COVID origins investigations could have implications for federal scientific research, vaccination campaigns and future funding of the pandemic response — as long as the committees don’t undercut the influence by stepping on each other.
Virginia Adult Retail Marijuana Sales Quashed By House GOP [FEATURE]
Elections have consequences, as Virginia voters are finding out. Two years ago, a Democratically-controlled Senate and House passed legislation legalizing marijuana, and the Democratic governor signed it into law. That law mandated that legal adult use sales commence by January 1, 2004, and left it to state lawmakers to figure out the regulatory details so that goal could be met.

Five Points On The Upcoming Wisconsin Election That Could Have Consequences For 2024
At the end of February — the sleepy, dead days of winter when the 2022 midterms have shrunk in the rearview and 2024 still feels far off — Wisconsin will host a blockbuster primary for an open seat on the state Supreme Court, a race with significant national ramifications. Justice Patience Roggensack, a conservative in her early 80s, is not seeking another term.

Finally a Credible Balloon Story
After a lot of heated speculation and a bunch of scrambled jet fighters over Canada and the far North of the United States we’re finally getting a credible explanation of the Chinese balloon saga. According to a new report from The Washington Post the United States is now examining the possibility that the People’s Liberation Army simply lost control of the balloon intended to surveil Guam. The US was monitoring the balloon since it went aloft from Hainan Island along China’s south coast.

Current Beneficiaries Aren’t Safe Either
I’m not sure I’d advise the political strategy TPM Reader JA suggests here. But he does get at a point I alluded to this morning. Current beneficiaries aren’t safe in GOP plans either. On paper, this is what they claim. No cuts for anyone over say 55. But Social Security is an inter-generational compact. Once you tell younger workers they will get lower benefits for the same tax contribution, you weaken support for current beneficiaries.
RonJohn Backs Scott In His Feud With McConnell Over Social Security Cuts

Mike Pence Wants To Have It Both Ways
This morning we get another reminder that Mike Pence is no hero. Pence clearly doesn’t want to confront Donald Trump in any kind of sustained way in order to preserve his own political viability – and it leads to laughable contradictions. I want to expand briefly on a point I alluded to in Morning Memo. Pence wants to have it both ways: He said he couldn’t testify to the House Jan.

McConnell Dodges When Pressed On Cheney’s Ouster By House GOP
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) ducked multiple times on Wednesday evening when Fox News anchor Bret Baier tried to ask him about House GOP lawmakers removing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) as conference chair for recognizing Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election. “Well look, it’s up to the House to make these kinds of decisions,” McConnell said when asked if he supported Cheney’s ouster.
McConnell Complains ‘Moscow Mitch’ Moniker Is ‘Over The Top’
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) doesn’t care for his new nickname. During a radio interview Tuesday on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” McConnell said it was “unbelievable” for a “Cold Warrior like me” to be mocked as a Kremlin ally for repeatedly blocking both Democratic and bipartisan bills aimed at curbing Russian election interference. “It’s an effort to smear me,” the Kentucky Republican told Hewitt.
Data Lords: The Real Story of Big Data, Facebook and the Future of News
This afternoon I saw a friend on Twitter say that he doesn’t buy the idea that if people just paid Facebook some sort of fee the data and privacy issue would go away. Because he subscribes to the Times, the Post and the WSJ and they each track his readership habits and sell that data to advertisers or make it available to them for targeting. This is at least partly true – I’ll discuss the ins and outs of that point in a moment.
House GOP gives election-year airing to IRS gripes
WASHINGTON – Republicans gave an election-year airing to their complaints about IRS chief John Koskinen Tuesday, telling a GOP-run House committee that he should be impeached for lying to lawmakers and destroying evidence. “Mr. Koskinen was sent to the IRS to clean it up but it’s gotten worse,” Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told the House Judiciary Committee, pressing a long-shot effort he’s led since last year to remove the agency’s commissioner.
