INTRODUCTION Social equity has gained prominence in conservation, reflecting both ethical imperatives and legal obligations. Target 22 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework emphasizes including Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in biodiversity decisions through inclusive governance (Stephens, 2023). Beyond being ethical, equitable approaches may yield better social and ecological outcomes (De Vente et al., 2016; Fiorino, 1990; Klein et al., 2015; Reed, 2008).

At the 32nd International Congress for Conservation Biology, we implemented interventions to support participants and demonstrated that they substantially reduced language barriers. We outline key factors for success, areas for improvement and guidance for future efforts.

This report on Australia’s progress under the Global Biodiversity Framework is a self-assessment, and the Australian government has given itself a glowing report card. We examined the claims in this report, called the Seventh Report to the UN’s Convention on Biological Diversity.
