What was your motivation for writing this book? A main motivation was a dissatisfaction with many of the standard ways of discussing the history of oil and its place in the global economy. Much of the dominant narrative around oil tends to invest it with some kind of innate power, separate from the social and economic logics of capitalism. What I try to do in the book is foreground what these are.
