Now, why should we care about Recommendation Systems…? ft. A soft introduction to Thompson Sampling
An ongoing Recommendation System series I caught myself today, once again for the 100...01-th day in a row, holding my late unopened dinner box as I'm browsing through Netflix for a show to watch while munching on my food. My feed is filled with a few too many Asian romance and American coming of age suggestions, probably based on a series or two from these categories that I watched, like, a month or two ago.

Including the resources I used to learn time-series as I was doing this project (MySQL, ARIMA orders selection, parallelization in Jupyter Notebook, etc) My process of creating a personal project often starts with knowing what type of skills or knowledge I want to learn or improve upon. The struggles and the tips: What I learn from doing my own classification project
So it has come to the point that you are advised to “find your own dataset and produce some *interesting* analyses”. It’s even better if that dataset is somewhat less popular, or, the task is more ambiguous, less clearly defined, and there are not hundreds of available notebooks on Kaggle. From my (a probably a lot of people's) experience, such datasets are as messy as they can be, with missing entries, having too many/too few observations, and all the features being in their rawest form possible.
COVID-19 Policies Multi-classification with Neural Network
Photo by Obi Onyeador on Unsplash Before getting into the detail of the work, I want to spare some space to share a summary of the motivation behind this project as well as this article. I have been having a great time at Coronanet.org, an amazing multinational team with more than 500 research assistants (RAs) working together to collect data on COVID-19 policies around the globe.
A year changed what Wisconsin knew about COVID-19 and who it affects most. It drove an increase in deaths statewide.
A year ago, as deaths from the coronavirus soared in New York, Seattle and elsewhere, people in Wisconsin waited and wondered. The first case of the virus had been confirmed in the state in late January 2020. It seemed just a matter of time before COVID-19 claimed a life in Wisconsin. On March 19, it took three. Lawrence Riley from Milwaukee. Dale Witkowski from Fond du Lac. Robert Blackbird from Grafton. All died on that Thursday. Many more would soon follow.

Homozygous Mutations in CSF1R Cause a Pediatric-Onset Leukoencephalopathy and Can Result in Congenital Absence of Microglia
Microglia are CNS-resident macrophages that scavenge debris and regulate immune responses. Proliferation and development of macrophages, including microglia, requires Colony Stimulating Factor 1 Receptor ( CSF1R), a gene previously associated with a dominant adult-onset neurological condition (adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia). Here, we report two unrelated individuals with homozygous CSF1R mutations whose presentation was distinct from ALSP.

My Voice: Economy needs immigrant ‘talents and labor’
Anti-refugee sentiment has been increasing in America. When two refugee students shared their stories of coming to America at a Lincoln High School event (as reported in the Argus Leader), they helped their audience sort out facts from myths concerning refugees. In telling their stories, they have done a great service to Sioux Falls. Many members of our community see refugees as a drain on the economy because refugees receive social services.
How Moms Discipline Kids When They're Not Home Much
Q: How do you discipline your children when you’re not home much? When my husband, Kyle, and I were first married, we agreed that we would share the responsibility of disciplining our future children. After the birth of our daughter, Isabella, I soon realized that my husband was completely and utterly taken by Isabella’s charm, and that the day-to-day disciplining would be left up to me. I really didn’t mind taking on the primary role as the disciplinarian, at first.
