After a large fire was knocked down at a Boyle Heights cold storage facility, the Los Angeles Fire Department says responsibility for the property is expected to be returned to the owner and tenant on Friday. On Wednesday, the LAFD officially declared a knockdown of the fire that had been burning for more than a week. Officials said crews had moved into the overhaul phase of operations and that they would ensure that debris within the structure did not continue to smolder.

Firefighters have moved into the overhaul phase of operations at a Boyle Heights cold storage facility after a fire that had been burning for more than a week was finally knocked down on Wednesday afternoon. The Los Angeles Fire Department said they were able to finally achieve a knockdown just before 6 p.m., meaning there were no active flames and no threat of fire spreading. But crews said firefighting apparatus will remain in the area as they continue to deal with smoldering areas and debris.

Los Angeles firefighters say fire at Boyle Heights cold storage facility could be extinguished shortly

Officials are confident that the fire at a cold storage facility can be extinguished in the near future, after about a week of the blaze creating health hazards in the East Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. In a news conference on Wednesday morning, Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Jacob Raabe said crews are "very close to final extinguishment" on the blaze that started last week at the 500,000-square-foot Lineage Big Bear cold storage facility at 1400 S. Los Palos Street.
