The Democratic and Republican races for governor in Maine are both going to a ranked-choice runoff, as is the 2nd District Democratic primary. To outline what's going to happen next, Morning Edition Host Irwin Gratz spoke with Kate McBrien, the chief deputy secretary of state. Her boss, Shenna Bellows, is one of the gubernatorial candidates, so won't be directly involved. McBrien says the first step is bringing election material to Augusta. This interview has been edited for clarity.

The June 9 primary will be the next election to be conducted by ranked-choice voting. The voting system, approved by voters in 2016, is expected to come into play in the five-way Democratic race for the gubernatorial nomination. It may also be used to decide the Republican gubernatorial primary. While seven candidates are still actively campaigning for that, eight names will appear on GOP ballots.
