Nevertheless, there is an element of unattractive gamesmanship at the heart of Wes Streeting’s negotiations and proposed solutions – particularly his decision to pull the plug on creating 1,000 new specialist medical training places this year.

GPs are putting themselves out of business

The latest data from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) are shocking. The body has this week reported that two GP surgeries are now closing every week, totalling 1,000 practices since 2018. Further, GP numbers are down by more than 600, despite the fact that registered patients are increasing. This is simply not conducive to good healthcare outcomes. Wes Streeting should be alarmed by these figures.

Having been brought up in a Welsh coal mining village where Aneurin Bevan was regarded as deity, and where generations of my family had been staunchly-socialist coal miners, I am desperate for the NHS to succeed. I worked in the NHS for almost 45 years, 30 of those as a cancer surgeon. My generation saw the NHS at its best. However, some aspects of the recently published ten-year plan for the NHS leave me confused and astonished. How many experienced clinicians were involved in the planning?
