PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In June 1772, a group of Rhode Islanders boarded the HMS Gaspee and left it burning off the shores of Warwick. Local historians credit the event as one of the first acts of resistance against British rule, predating the Boston Tea Party. And to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary and Rhode Island’s significant role in it, The Rhode Island Historical Society has partnered with a local distiller to offer a Gaspee-inspired whiskey.

Wet weather could dampen weekend plans

PROVIDENCE (WPRI) — Whether it’s parades, graduations, or beach trips, Sunday’s inclement weather could be dampening your plans. Our meteorologists are tracking widespread rain for Sunday. Sunday’s rain led to the cancellation of Charlestown’s annual Memorial Day Parade. The memorial service will still go on as planned, rain or shine. With rain on the way, some are altering their plans and taking things indoors.

(WPRI) — The Charlestown Memorial Day Parade Committee has canceled this year’s parade due to expected inclement weather Sunday. “We understand this event is a meaningful tradition for many and appreciate everyone’s support and understanding as we prioritize the safety of our participants, volunteers, and community members,” Chairman and Parade Coordinator Heather Paliotta told 12 News.
